Science of Vision

Converging lines of biological, perceptual and theoretical approaches are brought together in The Science of Vision to give a new perspective on the brain sciences and vision in particular. The book contains contributions from experts in the fields of biophysics, physiology, psychology and computation. While reviewing some basic knowledge, it mainly presents fresh ideas and includes some new results. The topics range from cells through perception to neurocomputing and are treated in depth, taking the specialist to the frontiers of research. At the same time the book is written in a manner understandable to the nonspecialist, in keeping with the multidisciplinary appeal of the subject. A glossary of terms also makes the book easy to read. In our age of specialization, this integrated approach is a welcome addition to the literature which will further interdisciplinary research and shed new light on the vision sciences.

"This is the report of a symposium representing the research program of the Physiological Psychology Branch of the Office of Naval Research. Host for the occasion on 10-11 March 1955 was the U.S. Naval School of Aviation Medicine where many ONR contractors in the fields of physiology and aviation psychology have integrated their research with that conducted by the Navy. The physical setting for the symposium provided other ONR contractors with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with research being conducted at Pensacola, while Pensacola personnel enjoyed the stimulating exchange of information and theories which characterized the sessions. The many outstanding scientists attending represented such diverse fields as physiology, psychology, neuroanatomy, psychophysics, psychoacoustics, and biochemistry. This multiplicity of disciplines provided a rich source of stimulation as each specialist became better aware of the techniques, contributions, and problems of the other, and the relationship of his own efforts to the search for a broader knowledge of the human organism."--Foreword
