This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, PKDD'99, held in Prague, Czech Republic in September 1999. The 28 revised full papers and 48 poster presentations were carefully reviewed and selected from 106 full papers submitted. The papers are organized in topical sections on time series, applications, taxonomies and partitions, logic methods, distributed and multirelational databases, text mining and feature selection, rules and induction, and interesting and unusual issues.
Informed professional debate about primary teacher education is long overdue. This book provides a sense of direction and impetus in this debate by focusing on pressing topical issues of policy and provision. There is focus on the current national scrutiny of initial and inservice teacher training, which is resulting in the development of a National Curriculum for ITE, the proposal of a General Teaching Council, and Continuing Professional Development initiatives from the TTA. In addition, the book will be of direct use in the design and implementation of new courses in teacher education. All the contributions have been specially commissioned for this book.
The first International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) was held ten years ago in Montreal (ITS ’88). It was so well received by the international community that the organizers decided to do it again in Montreal four years later, in 1992, and then again in 1996. ITS ’98 differs from the previous ones in that this is the first time the conference has been held outside of Montreal, and it’s only been two years (not four) since the last one. ITS 2000 is the fifth international conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The preceding conferences were organized in Montreal in 1988, 1992, and 1996. These conferences were so strongly supported by the international community that it was decided to hold them every two years. ITS’98 was organized by Carol Redfield and Valerie Shute and held in San Antonio, Texas. The program committee included members from 13 countries.
