Tumour Immunobiology

The idea that the immune system may play a role in protecting against malignant disease is not new. Since the earliest days of immunology research, scientists have sought to understand the mechanisms by which the host immune system might recognise cancer cells, and to manipulate these responses for therapeutic gain. It has become clear that the key to immune recognition of tumours lies in the relationship between cells in the microenvironment of the tumour itself. This volume provides a comprehensive collection of techniques for establishing tumour cell lines, testing their immunogenicity, and characterising the major effector cells, leading to protocols for manipulating antibody and T-cell receptor structure, preparing cytokine-secreting tumour cells and testing the efficiency of these new agents in preventing tumour growth. Researchers in immunology as a whole in addition to those interested in cancer immunology will find Tumour Immunobiology: A Practical Approach to bean invaluable practical resource.

The Biology and Clinical Applications of Interleukin-2

The molecular structure of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and that of its receptor subunits provide a basis for understanding lymphocyte activation by IL-2 and the generation of effector cells capable of mediating cytotoxicity towards tumors. This book provides an up-to-date account of IL-2, its effect on lymphocyte function, and clinical applications. Internationally know experts review the molecular aspects of cell signalling, giving insight on the in vivo pathways of activation likely to be important in determining clinical responses. They also examine the use of cytokines, particularly IL-2, in the treatment of cancer, and describe the results of recent clinical trials using IL-2, as well as of adoptive cell therapy. Providing a clear account of recent progress, the book also reviews the problems involved in attempting to improve the therapeutic benefit of IL-2, along with the importance of mechanisms which subverse IL-2 responses. This is the most up-to-date account of molecular research and clinical trials in this area, and will be of great benefit to students and researchers in immunology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and oncology who are interested in this vitally important topic

Migrations in Late Mesoamerica

Bringing the often-neglected topic of migration to the forefront of ancient Mesoamerican studies, this volume uses an illuminating multidisciplinary approach to address the role of population movements in Mexico and Central America from AD 500 to 1500, the tumultuous centuries before European contact. Clarifying what has to date been chiefly speculation, researchers from the fields of archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistics, ethnohistory, and art history delve deeply into the causes and impacts of prehistoric migration in the region. They draw on evidence including records of the Nahuatl language, murals painted at the Cacaxtla polity, ceramics in the style known as Coyotlatelco, s...

Principles of Stem Cell Biology and Cancer: Future Applications and Therapeutics Tarik Regad, The John van Geest Cancer Research Centre, Nottingham Trent University, UK, Thomas J. Sayers, Centre for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, Frederick, USA and Robert Rees The John van Geest Cancer Research Centre, Nottingham Trent University, UK The field of cancer stem cells is expanding rapidly, with many groups focusing on isolating and identifying cancer stem cell populations. Although some progress has been made developing efficient cancer therapies, targeting cancer stem cells remains one of the important challenges facing the growing stem cell research community. Principles of Stem C...

Red Earth Crees, 1860-1960

An ethnographic and documentary study of the subsistence-settlement patterns and social organization of the Red Earth Cree of east central Saskatchewan with particular emphasis upon a “deme” (discrete intermarriage arrangement) they shared with the Shoal Lake Cree. The author argues that demes are characteristic of hunter-gatherers but that environment, the events of the contact period, and modern government have disrupted its practice among Northern Algonkians.
