Advanced Control of Grid-Integrated Renewable Energy Power Plants

Presents the principles, derivations, and equations of renewable energy power plants, including MATLAB code Advanced Control of Grid-Integrated Renewable Energy Power Plants presents a comprehensive introduction to the power system dynamics and stability of renewable energy power plants (RPPs), such as wind turbines, wind power plants, and photovoltaic systems. The author—a noted expert on the topic—takes a rigorous approach to the analysis and modelling of RPPs, such as turbine rotors, PV cells, electronic converters, transformers, and aggregated grid models. This approach allows for the validation of requirements for sustainable power systems based on formal methods. The text deals wit...

This book on the dynamics of rail vehicles is developed from the manuscripts for a class with the same name at TU Berlin. It is directed mainly to master students with pre-knowledge in mathematics and mechanics and engineers that want to learn more. The important phenomena of the running behaviour of rail vehicles are derived and explained. Also recent research results and experience from the operation of rail vehicles are included. One focus is the description of the complex wheel-rail contact phenomena that are essential to understand the concept of running stability and curving. A reader should in the end be able to understand the background of simulation tools that are used by the railway industry and universities today.

Wind Energy Deployment and the Relevance of Rare Earths

Wind Energy Deployment and the Relevance of Rare Earths

The worldwide deployment of wind power plants is soaring. Yet the availability of their construction materials could be a potential bottleneck. As rare earth elements represent the most critical materials, Anja Brumme provides a market analysis of rare earths, ascertaining that geological scarcity is not the main problem. Instead, the author identifies four kinds of market failure: market power, co-production, by-production and negative externalities. It becomes apparent that the market for rare earth metals is in a state of severe disequilibrium. Subsequently, her estimate of future rare earth demand patterns based on the wind power industry by 2050 reveals that the current level of supply is unlikely to be sufficient in the long run. To allow for a more elaborate analysis, the author suggests two options of including a rare earth side condition in an integrated assessment model.

The idea of using models to inform business practice seems appealing, as it suggests the abstraction and control of a large, complex subject by means of a smaller, easily manipulated mechanism. In reality, however, many models prove inadequate when translated into business methods. Monitoring Business Performance – Models, Methods and Tools elucidates how the assumptions and perceptions that guide performance assessment are often based on models that are poor interpretations and descriptions of reality. In this book, the author scrutinizes the models underlying a number of well-known business methods and tools, and sheds light on the assumptions and subjective perceptions that undermine their effectiveness. In doing so, he offers a unique criticism of accepting business models without questioning their relevance and applicability, and highlights the need to treat models as hypotheses, rather than as certainties.

A Solar Buyer's Guide for the Home and Office

Solar power, once a fringe effort limited to DIY enthusiasts, is now fast becoming mainstream, and many home and business owners are curious about solar electric and solar thermal systems, and want to find out how to go about getting a clean energy generation system of their own. The market for solar systems has been growing at an exponential rate even in a sluggish economy but many are held back by widespread confusion about the technology. This book clears the air, allowing property owners to move forward with confidence to make their buildings comfortable, environmentally sound and secure against wild swings in energy prices.
