Hitler and Spain

“An imperative starting point of any future inquiry concerning Nazi Germany’s incursion into and manipulation of Spain’s civil strife.” —International History Review The Spanish Civil War, begun in July 1936, was a preliminary round of World War II. Hitler’s and Mussolini’s cooperation with General Franco resulted in the Axis agreement of October 1936 and the subsequent Pact of Steel of May 1939, immediately following the end of the Civil War. This study presents comprehensive documentation of Hitler’s use of the upheaval in Spain to strengthen the Third Reich diplomatically, ideologically, economically, and militarily. Hitler And Spain

The Spanish Civil War, begun in July 1936, was a preliminary round of World War II. Hitler's and Mussolini's cooperation with General Franco resulted in the Axis agreement of October 1936 and the subsequent Pact of Steel of May 1939, immediately following the end of the Civil War. This study presents comprehensive documentation of Hitler's use of the upheaval in Spain to strengthen the Third Reich diplomatically, ideologically, economically, and militarily. While the last great cause drew all eyes to Western Europe and divided the British and especially the French internally, Hitler could pursue territorial gains in Eastern Europe. This book, based on little-known German records and recently opened Spanish archives, fills a major gap in our understanding of one of the 20th century's most significant conflicts. Its comprehensive treatment of German-Spanish relations from 1936 through 1939, bringing together diplomatic, economic, military, and naval aspects, will be of great value to specialists in European diplomacy and the political economy of Nazi imperialism, as well as to all students of the Spanish Civil War.

In this in-depth analysis of America's role in the Yugoslavian civil war, Prof. Robert H. Whealey persuasively argues that the intervention by the U. S. and the Great Powers in this regional conflict actually expanded the war rather than curtailed it. Contradicting public perceptions of the war, Whealey advances several points of contention based on a thorough review of the evidence. First, the American public and its leaders knew too little about the history of Yugoslavia before intervening in its politics; as a result, America's proposed solutions were often uninformed and misguided. Second, the American media coverage of the war was too superficial. For example, the widespread use of the ...

American Intervention in Yugoslavia

This in-depth analysis of America's role in the Yugoslavian civil war contends that the war was expanded by Great Power intervention, not curtailed by it. Professor Whealey advances five points of contention that fly in the face of public perception of the war. First, American media coverage of the war was too superficial to provide the public with a sufficient understanding of the complex issues that fed the conflict. Second, the widespread use of the term ethnic cleansing by the press turned deep-seated religious conflicts into a simplistic black-and-white portrayal that compared Serbs with Nazis. Third, the Kosovo Liberation Army is more interested in uniting Kosovo with Albania than in establishing an independent Kosovo. Fourth, it is hard to justify the Allied bombing campaign as an attempt to stop ethnic cleansing when the Allies did not also react to similar campaigns by the Croatians and Kosovars. Fifth, the media has largely overlooked the influence of religion on the Balkan conflict and American military expansion.

Historians of the Jews and the Holocaust

The Nazi Holocaust is often said to dominate the study of modern Jewish history. Engel demonstrates that, to the contrary, historians of the Jews have often insisted that the Holocaust be sequestered from their field, assigning it instead to historians of Europe, Germany, or the Third Reich. He shows that reasons for this counterintuitive situation lie in the evolution of the Jewish historical profession since the 1920s. This one-of-a-kind study takes readers on a tour of twentieth-century scholars of the history of European Jewry, and the social and political contexts in which they worked, in order to understand why many have declined to view their subject from the vantage point of Jews' encounter with the Third Reich. Engel argues vehemently against this separation and describes ways in which a few exceptional scholars have used the Holocaust to illuminate key problems in the Jewish past.

Britain, France and Appeasement

This book investigates the course of Anglo-French policy in Europe from 1936 to1938, a critical period during which France was governed by a series of Popular Front coalition Ministries. It asserts that French policy-makers made a substantial impact upon the course of British foreign policy whilst breathing new life into the waning Entente Cordiale. The study contends that close attention to the role of French influence is fundamental to a grasp of British appeasement and rearmament policy in the period and essential to the understanding of the Anglo-French response to such problems as the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of League of Nations authority and the treatment of the Soviet Union. Essential reading for students of British or French Political History or the origins of World War II in Europe

Spain Betrayed

"Spain Betrayed provides full documentation of the Soviets' activities during the Spanish Civil War. Documents in the book reveal that the Soviet Union not only swindled the Spanish Republic out of millions of dollars through arms deals but also sought to take over and run the Spanish economy, government, and armed forces in order to make Spain a Soviet possession, thereby effectively destroying the foundations of authentic Spanish antifascism. The documents also shed light on many other disputed episodes of the war: the timing of the Republican request for assistance from the Soviet Union; the rise and fall of the International Brigades; the internal workings of the Comintern and its influence on Spain; and much more."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. A Primer in Power Politics

In clear and jargon-free style, A Primer in Power Politics explains the concept of power politics and provides an introduction to the principles of humanistic political realism. This book answers the questions: When and why do states resort to the use of force, and what are the uses and limits of force in conflicts among nations? What can we realistically expect from the United Nations, the World Court, arbitration panels, and other peaceful settlement techniques? What role do morality, ethics, and world public opinion play in the international interactions of nations? The first contemporary work in international politics to address power politics, this text is ideal for courses in international relations, U.S. foreign policy, comparative foreign politics, international conflict, and national security.
