This Research Topic in Frontiers in Medicine offers a concise overview of the latest knowledge in the field of Photomedicine on therapeutic and preventive modalities, and UV pathogenesis of skin cancer. Photomedicine has revolutionized the treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic skin diseases over the last century since Niels Ryberg Finsen was awarded in 1903 the Nobel Prize “in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases, especially lupus vulgaris, with concentrated light radiation, whereby he has opened a new avenue for medical science”. From then on, the field has moved on in leaps and bounds to expand phototreatment to many inflammatory as well as neoplastic skin diseases. With this Research Topic we aim to promote the field by giving the latest insights into Photomedicine’s therapeutic modalities and molecular mechanisms in treatment of diseases of the skin and beyond, as well as prevention from photodermatoses and carcinogenesis, as the dark sites of light. By engaging clinicians and scientists we intend to advance basic, clinical and translational research in the field of Photomedicine with its numerous facets.
Dermatological Phototherapy and Photodiagnostic Methods
This book is the most up-to-date publication on photodiagnostic and phototherapeutic methods used in dermatology. Edited by international experts in the field, it offers comprehensive information on every aspect of Photodiagnostics and Phototherapy. Corona- and Related Viruses
Corona- and related viruses are important human and animal pathogens that also serve as models for other viral-mediated diseases. Interest in these pathogens has grown tremendously since the First International Symposium was held at the Institute of Virology and Immunobiology of the University of Wiirzburg, Germany. The Sixth International Symposium was held in Quebec City from August 27 to September I, 1994, and provided further understanding of the molecular biology, immunology, and pathogenesis of corona-, toro-, and arterivirus infections. Lectures were given on the molecular biology, pathogenesis, immune responses, and development of vaccines. Studies on the pathogenesis of coronavirus infections have been focused mainly on murine coronavirus, and mouse hepatitis virus. Neurotropic strains ofMHV (e.g., JHM, A59) cause a demyelinating disease that has served as an animal model for human multiple sclerosis. Dr. Samuel Dales, of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, gave a state-of-the-art lecture on our current under standing of the pathogenesis of JHM-induced disease.
