Cultivating a Culture of Experimentation in Higher-education Teaching and Learning
As indicated by the diversity of the authors' physical locations, COVID and emergency-remote teaching affected Higher-Education-Institutions at a nearly global scale. Authors in this issue come from European countries (Switzerland, Germany), North America (the USA) as well as the southern hemisphere (South Africa). Given the breadth of COVID-related (change) experiences, the insights presented in this issue can be relevant to many HEIs across the globe, notwithstanding their cultural and institutional specificities. In addition, and of high relevance to us, the articles collected here focus both on different positions or roles (students, faculty, management) as well as on different levels of teaching and learning in higher education. While most contributions focus on the student experience during COVID, others investigate faculty/instructors' perspectives including faculty development. Yet another group takes a more systemic, institutional point of view. It could be argued that higher-education research takes up a multi-level perspective when exploring change and the new normal.
Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This international anthology aims at researchers and practitioners interested in the dynamic developments of research on higher education teaching and learning in Europe and beyond. It includes ten chapters covering a wide array of topics and methodologies used by researchers in the Special Interest Group ‘Higher Education’ (SIG4) of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI). The volume consists of three main sections: the first section includes three chapters addressing different practice- and research-based challenges related to students’ transitions into higher education and their teaching internship. The following four chapters investigate the assessment and development of students’ study paths and skills in a variety of disciplines. The final three chapters present research on student emotions and cultural perspectives, including mixed and multi-method empirical approaches. A key text for those keeping up with the current advances in the field.

Emotion and Behavior
In this Research Topic, several groups of researchers from both social and biological psychology summarize their findings addressing the relation between emotion and behavior. The Reflective-Impulsive Model (RIM) (Strack & Deutsch, 2004; 2014 in press) serves as a general orientation and provides a link to integrate the results from seemingly divergent perspectives. The contributions focuses on different types of emotional behaviors, like facial expressions and impulsive reactions. They address the central issue of approach vs. avoidance and include clinical topics like addiction and fear. Methodologically, the contributions are predominantly experimental and are partly based on manipulations in the context of virtual reality.
Excellent Teaching
Die Frage, wie die Lehre an Hochschulen zu Exzellenz verbessert werden kann, beantworten die Autorinnen und Autoren des Sammelbands aus vier Perspektiven. Sie betrachten Herausforderungen für die Steuerung der Organisation Hochschule und diskutieren aktuelle Forschungsentwicklungen, insbesondere anhand der Methode "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning". Außerdem werden gute Beispiele aus der Lehrpraxis präsentiert und Ansätze vorgestellt, um exzellente Lehre sichtbar zu machen. Der Band richtet sich an Akteurinnen und Akteure aus der Lehr- und Hochschulentwicklung.
Curriculare Aspekte von Schreib- und Forschungskompetenz
Im vorliegenden Themenheft geht es darum auszuloten, wie studentisches Schreiben als Teil des Curriculums verstanden werden kann und wie man Curricula gestalten muss, damit das Schreiben als Mittel des Lernens optimal eingesetzt werden kann. Dass das Schreiben nicht nur Mittel des Lernens, sondern selbst eine komplexe Kompetenz ist, die im Studium entwickelt werden muss und besonders eng mit der Forschungskompetenz verbunden ist, wird dabei vorausgesetzt. Das Heft versammelt Forschungsergebnisse, Modellüberlegungen und Praxisbeispiele, die die curriculare Dimension des Schreibens in den Blick nehmen und das Scheiben sowohl als Lernform als auch als Lerngegenstand behandeln.
Evidenzorientierte Qualitätsentwicklung in der Hochschullehre
Qualitätsentwicklung wird aktuell auf Grundlage empirischer Evidenz intensiv diskutiert und auch forciert, sodass empirische Forschungsarbeiten im Feld der Hochschullehre kontinuierlich an Bedeutung gewinnen. Sie sollen es ermöglichen, effektive und qualitätsvolle Hochschullehre zu charakterisieren und zu fördern. Ziel des vorliegenden Themenheftes ist die Anregung einer kritischen Diskussion der zunehmenden Evidenzorientierung in der Qualitätsentwicklung der Hochschullehre. Im Zentrum dieses Themenheftes steht die Frage, wie sich das Verhältnis von Hochschulforschung und Hochschulentwicklung in Bezug auf die Qualität der Lehre im Kontext der Evidenzorientierung bzw. -basierung situieren lässt.
Learning Analytics: Implications for Higher Education
This Special Issue gathers recent experiences and research examples concerning the use of Learning Analytics in higher education contexts of online and blended learning. All featured articles span across technically enabled data collection and processing/analysis, on the one hand, and, pedagogically motivated decision making by learners, teachers and other stakeholders on the other.
