This thoroughly illustrated handbook is the first complete how-to guide to the use of manual medicine techniques for sports injuries. For each region of the body, the book describes anatomy, physiology, physical examination, and common sports injuries, and details the various manual medicine techniques, with step-by-step instructions for treating specific injuries. More than 400 illustrations demonstrate how to apply these techniques. Separate chapters focus on injuries in fourteen specific sports and in specific athletic populations—the differently abled, children, women, the elderly, and pregnant athletes.

This book aims to provide orthopedic surgeons with all the information that they will require in order to set up and run a motor skills course that will meet the needs of junior staff in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and help in training better surgeons for the future. The coverage is wide-ranging, from the fundamentals of what it takes to be a sports surgeon through to validation methods that measure teaching effectiveness and the certification of surgical skills at the end of the course. Clear guidance is provided on how to teach concepts of surgical skill and the strategy and practical details of designing a training program, with inclusion of a helpful checklist of do’s and don’ts. Different basic training modalities are described, with a particular focus on the FAST system adopted by the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the role of simulators in surgical skills training is discussed. The book has been produced in cooperation with ISAKOS and the authors are leading professionals from around the world who offer a truly global and multidisciplinary perspective on the subject.
The events we are to live can not be predicted. Any guesses we make along this line are usually futile exercise. This does not negate the fact that an intelligently made commitment to unswervingly and unwaveringly work on a goal can make a difference. The degree of passion with which this project is undertaken is of enormous importance. It happens that only a relatively small number of people are capable of stubbornly sustaining the passion to remain faithful to the dream.
In the early 1990s, a small group of individuals recognized how virtual reality (VR) could transform medicine by immersing physicians, students and patients in data more completely. Technical obstacles delayed progress but VR is now enjoying a renaissance, with breakthrough applications available for healthcare. This book presents papers from the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 22 conference, held in Los Angeles, California, USA, in April 2016. Engineers, physicians, scientists, educators, students, industry, military, and futurists participated in its creative mix of unorthodox thinking and validated investigation. The topics covered include medical simulation and modeling, imaging and visualization, robotics, haptics, sensors, physical and mental rehabilitation tools, and more. Providing an overview of the state-of-the-art, this book will interest all those involved in medical VR and in innovative healthcare, generally.
This uniquely interdisciplinary book is a practical resource on orthopedic MR imaging that bridges the backgrounds of radiologists and orthopedic surgeons. Radiologists learn why surgeons order imaging studies. They also learn terminology that will help them tailor reports to the specialty. Orthopedic surgeons gain insight on when to order an MRI, how MRI affects decision making, and how to interpret images. Case studies also depict key clinical and exam points, supplemented by MR images and illustrations. Shorter sections highlight other anatomical areas, and additional chapters address diagnostic accuracy and imaging pitfalls.
