Passive and Low Energy Architecture
Passive and Low Energy Architecture contains the proceedings of the Second International PLEA Conference held in Crete, Greece, on June 28 to July 1, 1983. The book is organized into four parts as the topics of the conference. The first part brings together papers dealing with case studies of individual buildings or groups of buildings, completed or to be built, and of community planning. José Zanine Caldas
A handsomely produced survey on Brazilian design polymath José Zanine Caldas One of the most important figures in Brazilian material culture, José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) left behind a diverse legacy in architecture, design and art. His oeuvre includes maquettes built for architecture, industrial and handcrafted furniture, sculpture, landscaping and floriculture, low-income and elite housing designs, and research on the use and reuse of Brazilian woods. Much of Caldas' aesthetic was based on his dialogue with vernacular craft and its construction practices, which stemmed in part from his lack of a traditional education. This book introduces his work and celebrates the centenary of his birth, tracing his trajectory with a primary focus on the rationale of his design and his worldview. It includes original photography of Zanine's work alongside an extensive survey of personal and institutional collections, much of which is being published here for the first time.
Sports Mega-Events and Urban Legacies
This book examines the urban legacy of the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil across the seven cities that hosted matches. The authors, all experts and natives of South America, analyse the context and impacts of hosting the World Cup for each of the host cities. The chapters use a range of background data and local knowledge and understanding to critically assess what benefits or disadvantages came along with bidding for and hosting World Cup final games, and importantly considers who the beneficiaries where and are. It further provides detailed empirical evidence that highlights a growing trend in sporting mega events: the overestimation of benefits and an underestimation of costs involved in hosting. The book adds to the critical literature that provides a counterweight to governments' aspirations to use mega events for the purposes of development and/or globalization, irrespective of the views of their citizens.

Organized in eight thematic groupings, the well-chosen, elegantly translated texts--most of which originally appeared in Brazilian newspapers--range in date from 1927 to 1981 and draw from Pedrosa's extensive writings on art, architecture, the role of criticism and the critic, and the politics of culture and from his professional and personal correspondence. Informative brief essays by critics and scholars, including some who knew and collaborated with Pedrosa, introduce the volume as a whole and preface each of the eight sections. Pedrosa's life and career are detailed in a chronology created by his grandson. This long-overdue volume makes an important contribution to the literature of modernism. -- Choice.
