Melancolía

Poetry. MELANCOLA explores the emotional and psychological landscape of today's mad world. The poems wrestle with loss, despair, love, longing, the challenges of being a father and a husband, the search for identity, and the fight for one's soul. While the collection is not without hope, it resists easy redemption and facile optimism. "Agitations both tender and muscular simmer inside these poems. A sadness that's palpable and physical haunts this poet; so does rage at the power- mongers' forces that keep children hungry, that fester poverty in terrifying mutations. Poet of engagement, Garca speaks to the moon, to his sister, to the seasons and the garden, to his body a vessel: 'these ...

Lovely Rachel Dykstra goes to Brazil to do Bible translation in a small tribal group and is assigned to work with the Guará. She expects hardships from living in a primitive situation, but she does not expect to live with an uncongenial partner and to be terrorized by the Guará with their violent weekend drinking binges. Her romance with a handsome Brazilian doctor ends in disillusionment, and her childhood fear of abandonment surfaces. She experiences the comfort of her heavenly Father's faithfulness, the grace to forgive her faithless father, and the love of a man who shares her vision. The author is a retired Wycliffe Bible translator who has four children and twelve grandchildren. With her husband she analyzed an unwritten Amerindian language and co-translated the Maxakalí New Testament. She has an MA from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a PhD from Fuller Seminary School of Intercultural Studies. She published two bilingual dictionaries (Maxakalí-Portuguese, and Maxakalí-English) and taught missionary candidates in both Brazil and the United States. She lived in Brazil for forty years and enjoys writing about her experiences.

The prevalence of science fiction readership among those who create and program computers is so well-known that it has become a cliche, but the phenomenon has remained largely unexplored by scholars. What role has science fiction played in the actual development of computers and computing? And likewise, how has computing (including the related fields of robotics and artificial intelligence) affected the course of science fiction? The 18 essays in this critical work explore the interrelationship of these domains over the span of more than half a century.

Lockdown

The Carandiru House of Detention, in the teeming city of São Paulo, was the largest and most crowded prison in Latin America. Known as the 'Old House', it was also highly unusual in the way it was governed. Closed to the outside world, and even largely to the wardens, it was run almost entirely by the inmates themselves, who created a unique society complete with politics, hierarchies and a system of justice. In 1989, at the height of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil, with only a handful of physicians attempting to treat an inmate population of over 7,000, the medical situation at Carandiru was dire. A city doctor, Drauzio Varella, volunteered his time at Carandiru over the course of thirteen ye...
