Bertrand Russell’s research on logic is believed, alongside Wittgenstein’s and Moore’s works, to have fuelled the linguistic turn that characterized much of twentieth-century philosophy. This process originated in the refutation of British idealism and monism, providing a new interpretation of empiricism. But while his debt to traditional British empiricism has been the subject of study (including by Russell himself) and extensively investigated, the assumption that the British neo-idealist legacy was merely a polemical target of Russell and Moore’s realist pluralism has hindered a proper assessment of its influence – which, on the contrary, proves to be of theoretical significance. This essay attempts a documentary reconstruction – in part relying on the Bertrand Russell Archives – to better understand Russell’s relationship with the thought of F. H. Bradley and, indirectly but consequently, with the English idealist tradition.
Many articles and books dealing with Donald Davidson's philosophy are dedicated to the papers and ideas Davidson put forward in the `sixties and `seventies. In the last two decades, however, Davidson has continued to work in many areas of philosophy, offering new contributions, many of which are highly regarded by philosophers working in the fields concerned. For instance, Davidson has considerably developed his ideas about interpretation, theory of meaning, irreducibility of the mental, causation, and action theory; he has proposed an innovative externalist conception of the mental content and a new analysis of the concept of truth; and he has partly modified his theses about event, and the supervenience of the mental on the physical. In Interpretations and Causes, some of the leading contemporary analytic philosophers discuss Davidson's new ideas in a lively, relevant, useful, and not always entirely sympathetic way. This Element aims to introduce the different definitions of translation provided in the history of analytic philosophy. Starting from the definitions of translation as paraphrase, calculus, and language games, the Element explores the main philosophical-analytic notions used to explain translation from Frege and Wittgenstein onwards. Particular attention is paid to the concept of translation equivalence in the work of Quine, Davidson, and Sellars, and to the problem of translating implicit vs. explicit meaning into another language as discussed by Grice, Kripke, and the contemporary trends in analytic philosophy of language.
This collection of papers presents different views on metaphor in communication. The overall aim is to show that the communicative dimension of metaphor cannot be reduced to its conceptual and/or linguistic dimension. The volume addresses two main questions: does the communicative dimension of metaphor have specific features that differentiate it from its linguistic and cognitive dimensions? And how could these specific properties of communication change our understanding of the linguistic and cognitive dimensions of metaphor? The authors of the papers collected in this volume offer answers to these questions that raise new interests in metaphor and communication.
