Modelling Protocells

The monograph discusses models of synthetic protocells, which are cell-like structures obtained from non-living matter endowed with some rudimentary kind of metabolism and genetics, but much simpler than biological cells. They should grow and proliferate, generating offsprings that resemble in some way the parent protocells with some variation, so that selection may take place. Sustainable protocell populations have not yet been obtained experimentally and mathematical models are therefore extremely important to address key questions concerning their synthesis and behavior. Different protocell “architectures” have been proposed and high-level abstract models like those that are presented...

The Globesity Challenge to General Surgery

The Globesity Challenge to General Surgery

The increasing prevalence of morbid obesity has led the World Health Organization to coin the descriptive term “globesity” to reflect the worldwide nature of the problem. Providing health care to these patients, especially when surgery is required, can be extremely challenging owing to the specific needs in respect of logistics, facilities, and professional expertise. Appropriate care has to date often been unachievable and unaffordable outside of established bariatric centers, but such centers themselves usually have insufficient capacity and resources to cope with the demand among the general population. This book therefore provides a wealth of guidance and helpful tips and tricks on how to deal with obese patients within a general surgery setting. Importantly, it highlights the need for global rethinking on public health as regards resource allocation and patterns and standards of care, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes through greater affordability.

Deadly Spritz

Winter is coming to an end on the Ligurian Riviera and in the hills behind the coast, Giuseppe Caponnetto is retiring from the police force. However, his friend, Commissario Bonfatti, involves him in solving a murder case. Caponnetto has his hands full with his new life - he has recently become the owner of the Osteria Il Golfo restaurant, which demands his attention, as well as Giulia, the attractive tenant and chef. But the brutal murder of an elderly man lingers in his thoughts, especially as the main suspect appears to have an airtight alibi. Between antipasti and primi piatti, Caponnetto embarks on a journey where everything he learned during his police career paves the way for new adventures in his future.

Systems Biology Modelling and Analysis

Describes important modelling and computational methods for systems biology research to enable practitioners to select and use the most suitable technique Systems Biology Modelling and Analysis provides an overview of state-of-the-art techniques and introduces related tools and practices to formalize models and automate reasoning for systems biology. The authors present and compare the main formal methods used in systems biology for modelling biological networks, including discussion of their advantages, drawbacks, and main applications. Each chapter includes an intuitive presentation of the specific formalism, a brief history of the formalism and of its applications in systems biology, a fo...

Complex Systems and Cognitive Processes

This volume describes our intellectual path from the physics of complex sys tems to the science of artificial cognitive systems. It was exciting to discover that many of the concepts and methods which succeed in describing the self organizing phenomena of the physical world are relevant also for understand ing cognitive processes. Several nonlinear physicists have felt the fascination of such discovery in recent years. In this volume, we will limit our discussion to artificial cognitive systems, without attempting to model either the cognitive behaviour or the nervous structure of humans or animals. On the one hand, such artificial systems are important per se; on the other hand, it can be e...
