Law moves, whether we notice or not. Set amongst a spatial turn in the humanities, and jurisprudence more specifically, this book calls for a greater attention to legal movement, in both its technical and material forms. Despite various ways the spatial turn has been taken up in legal thought, questions of law, movement and its materialities are too often overlooked. This book addresses this oversight, and it does so through an attention to the materialities of legal movement. Paying attention to how law moves across different colonial and contemporary spaces, this book reveals there is a problem with common law’s place. Primarily set in the postcolonial context of Australia – although r...

This book examines the multi-media explosion of contemporary political satire. Rooted in 18th century Augustan practice, satire’s indelible link with politics underlies today’s universal disgust with the ways of elected politicians. This study interrogates the impact of British and American satirical media on political life, with a special focus on political cartoons and the levelling humour of Australasian satirists.

In addition, the text includes cross-cultural, cross-national views in punishment and corrections, as well as real-life stories from professionals in corrections, family members of the accused/incarcerated, and prisoners. "Written to commemorate the University of New England's fiftieth year as an independent institution, A Spirit of True Learning tells the story of the University's early struggles, its commitment to country students and the surrounding community, its rapid growth after autonomy, its development of a strong tradition of teaching and research, and its experiences over the last decade within the context of government reform and rationalisation." "This is also the story of a unique university. Like the Australian National University, UNE was founded during the great age of Australian nation-building and Keynesian optimism. Opened as an affiliate college of the University of Sydney in 1938, New England became autonomous in 1954. Its founders saw it as a deliberate attempt to bring the special advantages and the special problems of rural life in Australia under the spotlight of higher learning."--BOOK JACKET.

The Evolution of Galaxies

Galaxies have a history. This has become clear from recent sky surveys which have shown that distant galaxies, formed early in the life of the Universe, differ from the nearby ones. New observational windows at ultraviolet, infrared and millimetric wavelengths (provided by ROSAT, IRAM, IUE, IRAS, ISO) have revealed that galaxies contain a wealth of components: very hot gas, atomic hydrogen, molecules, dust, dark matter ... A significant advance is expected due to new instruments (VLT, FIRST, XMM) which will allow one to explore the most distant Universe. Three Euroconferences have been planned to punctuate this new epoch in galactic research, bringing together specialists in various fields of Astronomy.

Looking Deep in the Southern Sky

The idea of a joint ESO / Australia meeting on the large number of exciting new facilities that are, or will soon be, available tihne southern hemisphere arose quite naturally. In the optical and the near-infrared, the Very Large Telescope (VLT) will soon be operational. In the radio, the Australia Telescope Com pact Array is going to be upgraded to higher frequencies (20 and 100 GHz), together with an improvement in very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) facil ities. Other major facilities, such as the Large Millimetre Array and the lkT are being planned. Moreover, new deep surveys are underway in the southern hemi sphere: the southern Hubble Deep Field, the ESO Imaging Survey (BIS), pan ...
