Survey of the criticism devoted to Gottfried Keller, the important nineteenth-century writer in German. The works of Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) rank alongside those of Goethe and Thomas Mann, yet this volume is the first in any language to examine the critical assessment and scholarly expertise devoted to him, ranging from the early stages of journalistic criticism to the present day. Professor Ruppel begins by exploring the literary industry in the nineteenth century, the literary market place, the tastes of the reading public, and the expectations of editors, before going on to survey representative journalistic assessments of Keller's writing, including critical correspondence from Keller's contemporaries. Subsequent chapters examine in chronological order the most important milestones in Keller scholarship, particularly twentieth-century criticism and the Anglo-American tradition. There is also a brief history of the translations of Keller's works into English, investigating some of the difficulties confronting English translators of Keller's poetically creative German. The study concludes with an overview of recent scholarly assessments covering the past twenty-five years.

This third and final volume of A. David Moody's critical life of Ezra Pound presents Pound's personal tragedy in a tragic time. In this volume, we experience the 1939-1945 World War, and Pound's hubristic involvement in Fascist Italy's part in it; we encounter the grave moral and intellectual error of Pound holding the Jewish race responsible for the war; and his consequent downfall, being charged with treason, condemned as an anti-Semite, and shut up for twelve years in an institution for the insane. Further, we see Pound stripped for life, by his own counsel and wife, of his civil and human rights. Pound endured what was inflicted upon him, justly and unjustly, without complaint; and continued his lifetime's effort to promote, in and through his Cantos and his translations, a consciousness of a possible humane and just social order. The contradictions run deep and compel, as tragedy does, a steady and unprejudiced contemplation and an answering depth of comprehension.

Shakespeare’s works occupy a prismatic and complex position in world culture: they straddle both the high and the low, the national and the foreign, literature and theatre. The Second World War presents a fascinating case study of this phenomenon: most, if not all, of its combatants have laid claim to Shakespeare and have called upon his work to convey their society’s self-image. In wartime, such claims frequently brought to the fore a crisis of cultural identity and of competing ownership of this ‘universal’ author. Despite this, the role of Shakespeare during the Second World War has not yet been examined or documented in any depth. Shakespeare and the Second World War provides the first sustained international, collaborative incursion into this terrain. The essays demonstrate how the wide variety of ways in which Shakespeare has been recycled, reviewed, and reinterpreted from 1939–1945 are both illuminated by and continue to illuminate the War today.
This work records the development of the teaching of Germanic languages, primarily German, at Canadian universities over a period of 150 years. The study focusses first on the undergraduate and graduate programmes of study, i.e., what has been and is taught, and on the numbers, sources, and kinds of students enrolled in comes at every level. A detailed analysis is made in particular of the subjects of dissertations for the MA and PhD degrees. A separate chapter is devoted to the programmes of study in Germanic languages and literatures other than German (Danish, Dutch, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, Yiddish). A similar survey is then made of the teaching staff, where they come from, where and what they studied, and what contribution they have made to research. The third issue is that of the infrastructure of the discipline, what professional organizations there are to represent germanists and to what extent those engaged in research are supported by public funding agencies. The final chapter records the changes in all areas of the discipline over the five-year period from 1990 to 1995.
