Biomarkers in Bipolar Disorders

Biomarkers in Bipolar Disorders summarizes cutting-edge findings in biomarkers' research, emphasizing the most promising findings, tools and technologies relevant to drug development and personalized medicine. Key findings cover different levels of evidence such as genes, molecules, cells, systems, brain and behavior related to diagnosis (state and trait/endophenotypes), prediction of treatment response and follow-up outcomes, along with the most promising perspectives in each area. Each section includes a comprehensive and focused overview on the state-of-the-art and perspectives. The book concludes with a section on practical applications, encompassing diagnostics development (genetic test...

Brain Protection in Schizophrenia, Mood and Cognitive Disorders

Neuroprotection is a novel perspective for the treatment of disorders that lead to neurodegeneration and disabilities as a result of deterioration of neurons due to apoptosis, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, and other mechanisms. These mechanisms have implications not only for neurodegenerative disorders, but also for schizophrenia, mood and cognitive disorders. The purpose of this book is to provide an up-to-date overview of basic and clinical studies concerning the neuroprotective approach, mechanisms, and several compounds with neuroprotective properties that may contribute to more efficacious treatment of major mental health disorders. The book is divided into two sections. The first s...

Behavioral Neurobiology of Bipolar Disorder and its Treatment

This book offers the most up-to-date information about research surrounding the neurobiology of bipolar disorder as well as currently available and novel therapeutic options. The volume has assembled a widely respected group of preclinical and clinical researchers who bring their expertise to bear upon this illness by reviewing cutting-edge research and clinical evidence regarding the pathophysiology and treatment of bipolar disorder. Early chapters review the course and outcome and genetics of this highly heritable condition, including chapters on epigenetics and clinical endophenotypes. Several chapters offer a remarkably thorough and unique overview of the neurobiology of the disorder, including what is known from neuroimaging work and the development of animal models. Finally, the book covers treatment strategies for bipolar disorder, including both traditional and novel therapeutics, as well as non-pharmacological treatments. It offers both researchers and clinicians key insights into this devastating disorder.

Major depressive disorders have recently been associated with impairments in signaling pathways that regulate neuroplasticity and cell survival. Agents designed to directly target molecules in these pathways hold promise as new therapeutics for depression. With the collaboration of the most prestigious international specialists in biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics, psychiatry, psychology, and pharmacology, Neurobiology of Depression discusses the nature of the central nervous system circuits responsible for the modifications of neuronal functioning that lead to depression. The book begins by discussing animal, neurophysiological, and neuropsychological models of depression as well as...

The Bipolar Book

The Bipolar Book covers not only clinical and pathophysiological matters, but also technical aspects of the evidence accumulation for treatment of bipolar disorder. This approach brings in stimulating discussions on available data originating from current randomized controlled trials with specified considerations of bipolar mania, depression, and prophylaxis by providing accompanying recommendations for an improved evidence formation and synthesis. The Bipolar Book provides a clinician-friendly view of debatable issues on the existing randomized trials based evidence and the ways of improving them by respecting distinctive fluctuating pattern of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder is the most complex psychiatric disorder with different types of mood episodes, subtypes, varied course, and significant comorbidity. Not surprisingly, this complexity poses unique challenges to clinicians for optimal management of those with bipolar disorder. There has been an explosion of research into the causes and treatment of this condition over the past two decades. It is a daunting task for a practising clinician to make sense of this research and to remain up to date with progress in the understanding of the neurobiology and treatment of bipolar disorder. This book synthesizes and translates the vast array of research knowledge into information that...

The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic and debilitating mental illness affecting a significant proportion of the world's population. It is associated with significant impairments in health-related quality of life and psychosocial functioning, and has significant illness-related morbidity and heightened mortality rates due to medical comorbidities and suicide. The management of this disorder requires a complex combination of pharmacological and psychosocial interventions which can be challenging for clinicians. Written by world experts in the field of bipolar disorder, The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder: Integrative Clinical Strategies and Future Directions provides readers with a concise and comprehen...

Brain effects of Nicotine and derived compounds

Brain effects of Nicotine and derived compounds

Epidemiological studies have associated tobacco consumption with a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). The neuroprotective effect of tobacco has been mainly attributed to the stimulation by nicotine of the a7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which are implicated in neuronal survival, attention, and memory. A reduction in cholinergic function including lower levels of the expression of nAChRs in the hippocampus correlates with memory impairment in AD and schizophrenia. nicotine main metabolite cotinine shows similar neuroprotective and mnemonic properties. Also cotinine reduced Alzheimer’s pathology in a mouse model of the disease. Tobacco-derived compounds can be beneficial in a broad range of neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, AD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and PD as well as in diminishing tobacco withdrawal. In the latest years numerous new discoveries in this research area have been achieved and a Research Topic publication is needed.
