This Encyclopedia entry aims to review the current state of the art on the economics of happiness. It is organized into past, present and future research. The past research section focuses on the moral philosophical theory of utilitarianism and the 'method dispute' in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The advocates of utilitarianism understood human action as the inevitable result of subjective evaluations of the things and experiences that make people feel happy. The 'method dispute' started an influential debate on the measurement of utility. While the Austrian School of Economics argued that utility could be measured and quantified across time and space, the German Historical School...

This PhD thesis examines the relationship between perceptions of labour market opportunities and subjective well-being. It is often assumed that the presence and improvement of labour market opportunities has an immediate, positive effect on individuals' perceptions of such opportunities and consequently to their subjective well-being (Chung and Mau, 2014). To date, far too little attention has been paid to how social and cultural cognitive biases affect individuals' perceptions of their socio-economic reality and well-being beyond objective conditions (Kahneman, 2011; Bandura, 1999; Fiske et al., 2002; Nussbaum, 2003; Sen, 2009). Previous assumptions fail to recognize the role that individu...

The Political Economy of Policy Ideas

In 2008, the European Commission relaunched the policy idea of active inclusion, with the aim of facilitating the integration of people into sustainable and quality employment. Over ten years later, and in the aftermath of one of the most trying periods in Europe’s recent economic history, this book provides a critical and timely reassessment. The Political Economy of Policy Ideas contributes to the growing scholarly literature on ideational political economy and labour market regulation by providing a systematic analysis of the idea of active inclusion and its three core principles: activation, conditionality and personalization. The research breaks new ground by detailing how divergent interpretations of these principles, by relevant social actors in different contexts, have shaped their implementation. The book is of interest to scholars and students across comparative political economy, economic sociology, welfare and industrial relations studies.

This article examines the effect of individuals' perceived macro-labour market opportunities on their subjective well-being and the role of culture therein. Relying on affect valuation theory and socio-cultural psychology, we put forward theoretical arguments and predictions, that individuals' perceptions of labour market opportunities can differ from objective labour market opportunities due to cultural cognitive biases which, in turn, will influence subjective well-being. Our focus is on the individualist-collectivist cultural dimensions, which are captured by selecting Spain, a collectivist society, and the United States, an individualist society, for our analysis. We conducted two harmon...

Does the gender of immigrants affect the subjective well-being of natives? Our analysis is based on representative data from Germany and Catalonia (Spain). Both regions represent two most-different EU cases in terms of macroeconomic context, political mobilisation, and typology of migrants. Fixed-effects panel models and a regression discontinuity analysis provide robust evidence that the arrival of migrants is positively associated with the happiness of natives in general. Yet, when we identify crisis years and decompose the sample between male and female immigrants, we find significant differences. While female immigrants are perceived as a source of happiness (positive relationship), male immigrants are often perceived as a threat (negative relationship). Our findings have important implications for the understanding of anti-immigration behaviours and possible political responses.

Culture and Welfare State

. . . the book focuses on a very interesting and important. . . dimension of welfare analysis. . . the book provides a very rich and interesting range of analyses of the complex links between culture and welfare state. It deserves to be read both by advanced undergraduates and academics working in this area, and perhaps should also be read by policy-makers and politicians as a useful corrective to an overly economistic approach to welfare in the straitened years ahead. Rob Sykes, Social Policy and Administration The essays in this collection advance cultural analysis of the welfare state by describing the experiences of a large array of developed nations. . . The Economics of Sport, Health and Happiness

Including an array of distinguished contributors, this novel book fills a gap in the literature by addressing an important yet under researched issue in the field of sports economics. Nordic Social Attitudes in a European Perspective

For outsiders, the popularity and social sustainability of the extensive scope of Nordic welfare states, such as the strong role of the state and high levels of taxation, remains something of a mystery. Making use of recent international survey data, this important book goes some way towards solving this mystery. It underlines the remarkable success of Nordic welfare institutions which help to maintain not only low rates of poverty and inequality, but high levels of well-being, trust, social capital and political participation. Jochen Clasen, University of Edinburgh, UK Nordic welfare states have long enjoyed a leadership position in the provision of social welfare. They are now caught up in...
