Message for Freddie

A brief, insignificant and true moment from my childhood that has left me with a memory that has haunted me for over fifty years. It came from a time when post war austerity and a large American Air Force Base cast long shadows over the small Norfolk seaside town where I lived. As adults, we forget that a child's brain sees images very differently to us; a child's memory only remembers things that are in HIS world. When my Mother added the missing parts, many years later, it suddenly acquired added significance for all those concerned.

The Paston Family in the Fifteenth Century

This is the third and final volume in the trilogy by Colin Richmond on the Paston family in the 15th century, completing the sequence which began with The First Phase and continued with Fastolf's Will. This volume deals with the later years of the century and those topics and themes which arise at that point in the family's history. The principal characters are John Paston II, his younger brother John Paston III, and their mother, Margaret Paston. Richmond deals with a variety of issues, some of which have arisen in previous volumes and attempts some judgements on the role of the English gentry in the later middle ages.

Historia Ecclesie Abbendonensis

The History of the Church of Abingdon is one of the most valuable local histories produced in the twelfth century. It provides a wealth of information about, and great insight into, the legal, economic, and ecclesiastical affairs of a major monastery. Charters and narrative combine to provide a vital resource for historians. The present edition, unlike its victorian predecessor, is based on the earliest manuscript of the text. A modern English translation is provided on facing pages, together with extensive introductory material and historical notes. This volume covers the period from the reputed foundation of the abbey and its estates to c.1071. Volume II, already published, covers from c.1071- c.1164.
