Cognitive Enhancement
Cognitive enhancement is the use of drugs, biotechnological strategies or other means by healthy individuals aiming at the improvement of cognitive functions such as vigilance, concentration or memory without any medical need. In particular, the use of pharmacological substances (caffeine, prescription drugs or illicit drugs) has received considerable attention during the last few years. Currently, however, little is known concerning the use of cognitive enhancers, their effects in healthy individuals and the place and function of cognitive enhancement in everyday life. The purpose of the book is to give an overview of the current research on cognitive enhancement and to provide in-depth insights into the interdisciplinary debate on cognitive enhancement.
Theories of the Self and Autonomy in Medical Ethics
This book engages in a critical discussion on how to respect and promote patients’ autonomy in difficult cases such as palliative care and end-of-life decisions. These cases pose specific epistemic, normative, and practical problems, and the book elucidates the connection between the practical implications of the theoretical debate on respecting autonomy, on the one hand, and specific questions and challenges that arise in medical practice, on the other hand. Given that the idea of personal autonomy includes the notion of authenticity as one of its core components, the book explicitly includes discussions on underlying theories of the self. In doing so, it brings together original contributions and novel insights for “applied” scenarios based on interdisciplinary collaboration between German and Serbian scholars from philosophy, sociology, and law. It is of benefit to anyone cherishing autonomy in medical ethics and medical practice.
Criminal Law Without Punishment
How can criminal punishment be morally justified? Zisman addresses this classical question in legal philosophy. He provides two maybe surprising answers to the question. First, as for a methodological claim, it argues that this question cannot be answered by philosophers and legal scholars alone. Rather, we need to take into account research from social psychology, economy, anthropology, and so on in order to properly analyze the arguments in defense of criminal punishment. Second, the book argues that when such research is properly accounted for, none of the current attempts to justify criminal punishment succeed. But that does not imply that the state should do nothing about criminal wrongdoing. Rather, the arguments that were supposed to justify criminal punishment actually speak in favor of an alternative approach to criminal law: restitution to the victim and restorative justice. That is to say, the state should coerce offenders to provide restitution for the harm inflicted on victims, and whenever possible restorative approaches should be taken to address criminal wrongdoing.
Silence, Scapegoats, Self-reflection
Since the end of World War II, Nazi medical atrocities have been a topic of ambivalent reactions and debates, both in Germany and internationally: An early period of silence was followed by attempts of victims and representatives of medical organisations to describe what happened. Varying narratives developed, some of which had a stabilizing function for the identity of the profession, whereas others had a critical and de-stabilizing function. In today's international debates in the field of medical ethics, there are frequent references to Nazi medical atrocities, in particular in the context of discussions about research on human subjects, and on euthanasia. The volume analyses the narratives on Nazi medical atrocities, their historicity in different stages of post-war medicine, as well as in the international discourse on biomedical ethics.

Essen ist nicht nur eine physiologische Notwendigkeit für alle Lebewesen, sondern integriert zudem fast alle Bereiche des sozialen und kulturellen Verstehens, Deutens und Handelns: Es ist anthropologische Konstante - und doch zugleich kulturell, sozial, ökonomisch, sogar politisch und nicht selten erotisch konnotiert. Assistierter Suizid als sinnvolles Ende eines als sinnlos erachteten Lebens?
Die Frage, ob und in welcher Form Sterbehilfe legitim ist, beschäftigt die Menschen seit Jahrtausenden. Nach der Streichung des § 217 Abs. 1 StGB hat diese Thematik in Deutschland erneut an Aktualität gewonnen. Aus einer Sinnperspektive heraus betrachtet die Autorin den assistierten Suizid; vor allem auch vor der Sinnkonzeption V. Frankls. Was bedeutet Hilfe zur Selbsttötung für die Sterbewilligen selbst, die assistierenden Dritten, die ganze Gesellschaft? Kann assistierter Suizid sinnvolle Hilfe sein oder führt er für den Einzelnen und gesamtgesellschaftlich zu einer Sinn-Negation des Lebens und Sterbens?
Menschen machen
Der programmatische Gedanke, menschliches Leben durch gezielte Eingriffe verbessern zu können, hat seit der Entstehung der neuzeitlichen Wissenschaften Konjunktur. Das wissenschaftlich-technisch begründete Programm, Menschen machen zu können, reicht von minimalen Manipulationen bis hin zu umfassenden medizinisch-invasiven oder psychotechnischen Eingriffen. Die Implikationen dieser zwiespältigen Fortschrittsgeschichte sind bis heute unzulänglich untersucht worden. Optimierungen des Humanen und damit verbundene Normierungen der Lebens- und Handlungspraxis transformieren den Menschen und unser Bild vom Menschen in vielfältiger Weise. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen solchen »Schattenseiten« von Optimierungsprogrammen nach.
ZusammenDenken
Handeln, Personsein, Menschenwürde und zahlreiche Fragen der Angewandten Ethik – das ist das weite Spektrum dieser Festschrift und auch des Denkens von Ralf Stoecker, dem sie gewidmet ist. Ganz in seinem Geiste laden die Beiträge des Bandes dazu ein, zusammen zu denken und zusammenzudenken, was – möglicherweise – zusammengehört. Die Herausgebenden Roland Kipke ist promovierter Philosoph und lehrt an der Universität Bielefeld. Er forscht zu Fragen der Bioethik, der theoretischen Ethik und der politischen Philosophie. Nele Röttger ist Philosophin und arbeitet als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Praktische Philosophie der Universität Bielefeld. Johanna Wagner ist promovierte Philosophin. Sie forscht und lehrt zu Themen der praktischen Philosophie, insbesondere der angewandten Ethik. Almut Kristine v. Wedelstaedt arbeitet und lehrt an der Abteilung Philosophie der Universität Bielefeld und forscht im Bereich der Praktischen Philosophie.
