Rough Sets and Intelligent Systems - Professor Zdzisław Pawlak in Memoriam

This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Zdzis{\l}aw Pawlak who passed away almost six year ago. He is the founder of the Polish school of Artificial Intelligence and one of the pioneers in Computer Engineering and Computer Science with worldwide influence. He was a truly great scientist, researcher, teacher and a human being. This book prepared in two volumes contains more than 50 chapters. This demonstrates that the scientific approaches discovered by of Professor Zdzis{\l}aw Pawlak, especially the rough set approach as a tool for dealing with imperfect knowledge, are vivid and intensively explored by many researchers in many places throughout the world. The submitted papers prove that interest in rough set research is growing and is possible to see many new excellent results both on theoretical foundations and applications of rough sets alone or in combination with other approaches. We are proud to offer the readers this book.

Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing, RSCTC 2000, held in Banff, Canada in October 2000. The 80 revised papers presented together with an introduction and three keynote presentations have gone through two rounds of reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in topical sections on granual computing, rough sets and systems, fuzzy sets and systems, rough sets and data mining, nonclassical logics and reasoning, pattern recognition and image processing, neural networks and genetic algorithms, and current trends in computing.

Stochastic Versus Fuzzy Approaches to Multiobjective Mathematical Programming under Uncertainty

Operations Research is a field whose major contribution has been to propose a rigorous fonnulation of often ill-defmed problems pertaining to the organization or the design of large scale systems, such as resource allocation problems, scheduling and the like. While this effort did help a lot in understanding the nature of these problems, the mathematical models have proved only partially satisfactory due to the difficulty in gathering precise data, and in formulating objective functions that reflect the multi-faceted notion of optimal solution according to human experts. In this respect linear programming is a typical example of impressive achievement of Operations Research, that in its dete...

Search Methodologies

The first edition of Search Methodologies: Introductory Tutorials in Optimization and Decision Support Techniques was originally put together to offer a basic introduction to the various search and optimization techniques that students might need to use during their research, and this new edition continues this tradition. Search Methodologies has been expanded and brought completely up to date, including new chapters covering scatter search, GRASP, and very large neighborhood search. The chapter authors are drawn from across Computer Science and Operations Research and include some of the world’s leading authorities in their field. The book provides useful guidelines for implementing the m...

Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining, and Granular Computing

The two volume set LNAI 3641 and LNAI 3642 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining, and Granular Computing, RSFDGrC 2005, held in Regina, Canada in August/September 2005. The 119 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 277 submissions. They comprise the two volumes together with 6 invited papers, 22 approved workshop papers, and 5 special section papers that all were carefully selected and thoroughly revised. The first volume includes 75 contributions related to rough set approximations, rough-algebraic foundations, feature selection and reduction, reasoning in information syst...

Multicriteria Analysis

J. CIimaco and C. H. Antunes After the pleasure which has been to host the community of researchers and practitioners in the area of multicriteria analysis (MA) in Coimbra in August 1994, this volume of proceedings based on the papers presented at the conference is the last step of that venture. Even though this may not be the appropriate place we cannot resist, however, the temptation to express herein some brief feelings about the conference. Almost everything concerning the conference organisation has been "handcrafted" by a small number of people, with the advantages and disadvantages that this approach generates. Our first word of acknowledgement is of course due to those who have had a...

Transactions on Rough Sets II

The LNCS journal Transactions on Rough Sets is devoted to the entire spectrum of rough sets related issues, starting from logical and mathematical foundations, through all aspects of rough set theory and its applications, such as data mining, knowledge discovery, and intelligent information processing, to relations between rough sets and other approaches to uncertainty, vagueness and incompleteness, such as fuzzy sets and theory of evidence. This second volume of the Transactions on Rough Sets presents 17 thoroughly reviewed revised papers devoted to rough set theory, fuzzy set theory; these papers highlight important aspects of these theories, their interrelation and application in various fields.
