Costa Rica’s journey towards sustainable food systems
Governments and other food system actors from the private sector, civil society, research and education institutions are being called upon to work together to enhance the sustainability, resilience and inclusiveness of food systems. The analysis presented in this case study provides an insight into the process and direction of food system transformation, and the key capabilities required. It portrays the interplay of different internal and external dynamics combined with the capacity of food system actors to connect, forge alliances and commit to specific actions that has enabled Costa Rica to move towards a more sustainable food system. As a result, the sustainability debate has increasingly opened up, moving from a focus on environmental sustainability in food production towards a broader discussion encompassing nutrition and health.

Gobiernos y otros actores del sistema alimentario son llamados a trabajar juntos para mejorar la sostenibilidad, resiliencia e inclusión de los sistemas alimentarios. El análisis que se presenta en este estudio de caso proporciona una serie de ideas clave sobre los procesos y la dirección de la transformación del sistema alimentario costarricense, así como las capacidades necesarias para tal transformación. El estudio presenta la interacción entre las diferentes dinámicas internas y externas, combinadas con la capacidad de los actores del sistema alimentario para forjar alianzas y comprometerse con acciones específicas que han permitido a Costa Rica avanzar hacia un sistema alimentario más sostenible. Como resultado, el debate sobre la sostenibilidad se ha ido abriendo a lo largo de los años, pasando de un enfoque en la sostenibilidad medioambiental en la producción de alimentos, a un debate más amplio que abarca la nutrición y la salud.
