Ezekiel’s Sign-Acts
The Ezekiel passages describing the instructions for, and dramatization of, divine messages (Ezekiel 3-5; 12; 24; 37) are among the most bizarre in the Hebrew Bible. The prophet is commanded to embody his message of judgment to Jerusalem, and these actions clarify the oracles they surround. Yet, these sign-acts are frequently overlooked within Ezekiel studies, which tend to focus on the book’s strange visions and controversial oracles. This volume addresses the growing diversity in approaches in Ezekiel studies by inviting international senior and junior scholars to focus on the texts concerning Ezekiel’s sign-acts. It aims to redirect scholarly attention to these often-ignored texts, which stand so central to understanding the nature of prophecy as well as the overall book of Ezekiel.
Explorations in the Interpretation of Samuel
The volume consists of 21 essays from an international group of scholars. The volume is broken into two parts: Reading Samuel with the Hebrew Bible, and beyond the Hebrew Bible. Seeing Color in Classical Art
The remains of ancient Mediterranean art and architecture that have survived over the centuries present the modern viewer with images of white, the color of the stone often used for sculpture. Antiquarian debates and recent scholarship, however, have challenged this aspect of ancient sculpture. There is now a consensus that sculpture produced in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as art objects in other media, were, in fact, polychromatic. Color has consequently become one of the most important issues in the study of classical art. Jennifer Stager's landmark book makes a vital contribution to this discussion. Analyzing the dyes, pigments, stones, earth, and metals found in ancient art works, along with the language that writers in antiquity used to describe color, she examines the traces of color in a variety of media. In Exile, Incorporated, author Rosanne Liebermann argues that the biblical book of Ezekiel makes rhetorical use of the human body to construct a specific in-group identity for its ancient Judean audience--namely Judeans who experienced forced migration to Babylon in the sixth century BCE. As Liebermann shows, Ezekiel encourages certain bodily practices within this group that identifies them as "true" Judeans, while also evoking feelings of disgust regarding the bodies of those who do not conduct such practices. In this way, Ezekiel encouraged an isolationist Judean identity that could survive displacement from the homeland.
