Anatomy of a Rose

An acclaimed nature writer reveals the secret life of flowers... In Anatomy of a Rose, Sharman Apt Russell eloquently unveils the "inner life" of flowers. From their diverse fragrances to their nasty deceptions, Russell proves that, where nature is concerned, 'wonder is not only our starting point, it can also be our destination.' Throughout this botanical journey, she reveals that the science behind these intelligent plants - how they evolved, how they survive, how they heal - is even more awe-inspiring than their fleeting beauty. Russell helps us imagine what a field of snapdragons looks like to a honeybee, and she introduces us to flowers that regulate their own temperature, attract polli...

Roses are known as ‘the Queen of Flowers’. Roses are always in demand as they are the only flowers that are associated with beauty, fragrance and eternal love. Regarded as the most important cut flower world-wide, commercially as well as aesthetically, roses are traditionally grown as perennial woody shrubs. Generally the growth habit of the rose plant is to grow as an erect shrub; however trailing roses or climber roses with stems having prickles are not so uncommon. The flower size normally varies from large (single roses used as cut flowers) to small (bushy roses or bunch roses used for bedding purposes) depending on varieties. The flower color is available in almost all color ranges such as white, purple-violet, yellow, orange, red, maroon and magenta. New hybrids and propagation methods have made it possible to cultivate a single variety of rose plant with multiple-colored flowers.

Rosie Sanders' Roses

  • Categories: Art

Award-winning and hugely popular artist Rosie Sanders showcases the beauty of the rose in her follow up to Rosie Sanders Flowers. Over 80 stunning paintings and sketches are shown for the first time. The artist writes a personal letter on each of her rose paintings (to be given unopened to the final recipient or buyer of the painting). Many of these personal letters sit alongside the paintings, as they explain the creative and emotional process she went through to create it. The book is a revealing insight into the artist's muse and the author's sketches and drawings are also included to show the full artistic process. The book is introduced by an extended essay on the resonance of the rose – all across the world – in our art, literature, poetry, folklore and gardens. The rose emblem is timeless and this book not only celebrates its beauty in art but tells the story of the rose as one of nature's most powerful motifs.
