Love and Death

Philosopher Ross Reed, Ph.D., refers to an eclectic array of thinkers in Love and Death: an Existential Theory of Addiction in particular, existential philosophers Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) and Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980). According to Dr. Reed, addiction is usually the result of existential or life conditions rather than underlying physiological problems. Therefore, it may involve not only drugs or alcohol but also relationships, belief systems, activities, and even emotional states. Anything that can serve to deflect ones consciousness from reflectively apprehending the task of becoming oneself can serve as an object of addiction. If the object is another person, one might ask whether in fact addiction can masquerade as love. Is it possible to believe that you are in love with someone when in fact you are merely addicted to him or her? In this creative and provocative work, Reed argues that Sartres theory of love is in fact a theory of addiction.

Its pages also offer a place for Texas Exes to swap stories and share memories of Austin and their alma mater. The magazine's unique name is Spanish for "mayor" or "chief magistrate"; the nickname of the governor who signed UT into existence was "The Old Alcalde."

“For as long as I can remember, life has been measured in seconds. The fewer, the better.” Most people equate success with having more, but Sanya’s quest was always for less. She started running track as a little girl in Jamaica and began competing when she was only seven. At 31 she’s had a career’s worth of conditioning to run a 400-meter race in 50 seconds, hopefully 49, or even better, 48. When she started training with her coach, Clyde Hart, they divided her race into four phases: push, pace, position, poise, and with the inherent prayer. For years Sanya worked to hone every phase in practice so that when it came time to race, her body would respond as her mind instinctively tr...

In 2015 the College of Policing published its Leadership Review with specific reference to the type of leadership required to ensure that the next generation of Chief Constables and their management approach will be fit for purpose. Three key issues were highlighted as underpinning the effective leadership and management of contemporary policing: hierarchy, culture and consistency. Yet these are not just relevant to modern policing, having appeared as constant features, implicitly and explicitly, since the creation of the first provincial constabularies in 1835. This collection reviews the history of the UK Chief Constable, reflecting on the shifts and continuities in police leadership style...
