Panta Rhei

Imperial Rule

Renowned academics compare major features of imperial rule in the 19th century, reflecting a significant shift away from nationalism and toward empires in the studies of state building. The book responds to the current interest in multi-unit formations, such as the European Union and the expanded outreach of the United States. National historical narratives have systematically marginalized imperial dimensions, yet empires play an important role. This book examines the methods discerned in the creation of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Ottoman Empire, the Hohenzollern rule and Imperial Russia. It inspects the respective imperial elites in these empires, and it details the role of nations, religions and ideologies in the legitimacy of empire building, bringing the Spanish Empire into the analysis. The final part of the book focuses on modern empires, such as the German "Reich." The essays suggest that empires were more adaptive and resilient to change than is commonly thought.

The Last Descendant of Aeneas

The Last Descendant of Aeneas

From antiquity to the eve of the modern era, rulers of Western empires inspired hero worship by proclaiming their divine origins. In this fascinating original study, Marie Tanner presents the history of the emperor's mythic image and its continuing influence on Western political thought. She shows that these pretensions to divinity were based on the Trojan legend and the myth of Rome as developed in Vergil's Aeneid and that later Christian emperors expanded these claims by tracing their lineage not only to the pagan gods but also to the priest-kings of the Old Testament. Through this amalgam of heritages each successive Holy Roman emperor proclaimed that he was the last descendant of Aeneas,...

Weird Sex & Snowshoes

Despite the glare emanating from Hollywood, the Canadian film industry perseveres, experimenting with form, content and style to create unique and varied movies. In this study of contemporary film in Canada, Vancouver Sun film reviewer Katherine Monk details the growth of our country's quirky, diverse and stubbornly independent cinema. With the discerning eye of a critic, the enthusiasm of an insatiable cinephile and the passion of a proud Canuck, Monk delves into the guts of Canada's cinematic tradition-where it came from, what it looks like and what's going on beneath the surface of the frame. She pulls Canadian film apart at the splice marks, rips open its subtext and exposes not just the beating heart of one plucky cinematic species-but the hidden soul of a nation.Full of film reviews and profiles of some of Canada's greatest filmmakers (David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, Francois Girard, Robert Lepage, Anne Wheeler and many more), Weird Sex & Snowshoes explores the slippery notion of "Canadian identity" and how it has evolved through images on the silver screen.

The Limits of Loyalty

"This fine collection on competing political loyalties in the late Habsburg Monarchy is framed by clear research questions. The dynasty faced formidable competitors in its own crownlands, cities and villages. [This volume] presents this competition in vibrant and varied case studies. From it readers will take a sampling of some of the best recent scholarship on the Habsburg Monarchy." - Slavonic and East European Review "Any future discussion on the last years of the Habsburg Monarchy's political history should build on this collection's significant achievements whether the point of departure is the monarchy's ultimate failure or a decidedly a-teleological perspective...It is not a book that ...

The Web of Data

This book’s main goals are to bring together in a concise way all the methodologies, standards and recommendations related to Data, Queries, Links, Semantics, Validation and other issues concerning machine-readable data on the Web, to describe them in detail, to provide examples of their use, and to discuss how they contribute to – and how they have been used thus far on – the “Web of Data”. As the content of the Web becomes increasingly machine readable, increasingly complex tasks can be automated, yielding more and more powerful Web applications that are capable of discovering, cross-referencing, filtering, and organizing data from numerous websites in a matter of seconds. The bo...

Staging the Past

This volume contains three sections of essays which examine the role of commemoration and public celebrations in the creation of a national identity in Habsburg lands. It also seeks to engage historians of culture and of nationalism in other geographic fields as well as colleagues who work on Habsburg Central Europe, but write about nationalism from different vantage points. There is hope that this work will help generate a dialogue, especially with colleagues who live in the regions that were analyzed. Many of the authors consider the commemorations discussed in this volume from very different points of view, as they themselves are strongly rooted in a historical context that remains much closer to the nationalism we critique.
