In this very readable book, Roy Francis tells a personal story of growing up in a Black Pentecostal home and how, as part of the Windrush generation, his parents, like many others from the Caribbean came to Britain for the chance of a better life. This book explains the problems they faced. The religious climate they found, and their music. He explains why his parents left Jamaica to come to Britain, describes the country they came to, the environment they found, how they attempted to adjust, the religious climate in the country, and how when they faced racism, this was something entirely new to them. Many were Christians and members of the established church in the West Indies. He tells the...

Translation and interpreting studies and intercultural communication have so far largely been treated as separate disciplines. Translational Action and Intercultural Communication offers an overview of a range of different theoretical and methodological approaches to examining the hitherto largely ignored connection between the two research strands. Drawing on three key concepts ('functional equivalence', 'dilated speech situation' and 'intercultural understanding'), this interdisciplinary volume attempts to interrelate the following thematic strands: procedures of mediating between cultures in translational action, problems of intercultural communication in translational action, and insights into intercultural communication based on analyses of translational action. The volume features both contrastive papers and papers which investigate communicative events in actu. The analyses presented deal with a variety of genres and types of interaction, including children's books, speech acts in dramatic text, popular science and economic texts, excerpts from intercultural university encounters, phatic talk, toast giving and medical communication.

A damning examination of how violence serves to maintain social order and elite power in the United States The Violent Underpinnings of American Life boldly asserts that violence—far from going against American ideals—is as American as apple pie, central to the country’s social order and the dominance of its most powerful groups. Drawing from extensive research and analysis of key social, political, and cultural events, Liam Downey investigates the myriad ways violence maintains the American way of life. Through compelling case studies, Downey identifies four main ways in which violence produces and maintains the American social hierarchy: the creation of divisions among non-elite soci...
