Sparks of Reason
Throughout the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, the Low Countries were home to a vibrant tradition of lay philosophy in Dutch. 'Sparks of reason' takes a detailed look at this philosophical tradition, with a special focus on the sixteenth century. During this turbulent century, several authors, such as Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert (1522-1590) and Hendrik Laurensz Spiegel (1549-1612), developed an ethics which was founded on rationality and self-motivation. This 'vernacular rationalism' was a dynamic melting pot of classical philosophy, vernacular humanism, intellectual spiritualism and popular piety. As this book shows, vernacular rationalism was rooted in an age-old Netherlandish tradition and was to be-come one of the breeding grounds for the early Enlightenment in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Its point of departure was the inherent goodness of humankind and the possibility of moral growth through rational knowledge. Its goal was perfect happiness.

Revisiting the Synod of Dordt (1618-1619)
The Synod of Dordt (1618-1619), the international assembly which ended the yearslong dispute between Arminians and Calvinists, was a defining event in the history of the Dutch Republic. This collected volume presents new facts and analyses concerning the Synod, its context, and its legacy. It includes contributions on the Synod’s international character (Genevan delegation, James Ussher), biased historiography ( John Hales and Walter alquanquall), scholasticism ( Johannes Maccovius), philosophical ramifications, and Arminian theology. New, manuscript-based details about the formation of the Canons of Dordt are presented. Other papers examine the Canons' ascendency to confessional status, intentional pastoral style, and view on the salvation of infants. Finally, its reception in the Dutch context as reflected in prints and printed works is mapped out.

The Yearbook of the Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies mirrors the annual activities of staff and visiting fellows of the Centre as well as scholars of the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg and reports on symposia, workshops, and lectures. Although aimed at a wider audience, the yearbook also contains academic articles and book reviews on scepticism in Judaism and scepticism in general. The Yearbook 2016 was published as volume 1 in the series Jewish Thought, Philosophy, and Religion. From 2017 onwards, the Yearbook is published as a separate series. Further book series of the Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies are Studies and Texts in Scepticism and Jewish Thought, Philosophy, and Religion.

Performative literary culture emerged as a set of practices that shaped production and distribution of learning in late medieval and early modern Western Europe, both in Latin and the vernacular. Performative literary culture encompasses the plays, songs, and poetry performed for live audiences in (semi-)public spaces and the organizations championing performative literature through meetings and events. Strippers, Hoers & Heroes
Ruben and Lillian (Martin) Corgill were my parents. Ruben was born in 1890. Lillian was born in 1898. Their lives spanned a time period from aEURoehorse and buggyaEUR days to the jet age and space exploration. However, the way they lived didn't change very much as the modern world was evolving around them. Throughout their productive years, they stuck to the old ways of surviving by being self-sufficient in a rural, agricultural environment. Their roots had not prepared them for aEURoegetting byaEUR in other ways. Even in the 1950s, they were still manually doing farm work when machines had replaced people and horses all around them. So many times, one day ended with no clear conviction that the next one wouldn't bring problems beyond their capabilities. How they managed to survive from day to day and year to year on the meager fruits of their labors and raise a family in the process is an outstanding example in human integrity and industry. They survived, though, and held their heads high to the end. Theirs is a story worth telling.
