Demystifying the Sacred
Demystifying the Sacred: Blasphemy and Violence from the French Revolution to Today offers a much-needed analysis of a subject that historians have largely ignored, yet that has considerable relevance for today’s world: the powerful connection that exists between offences against the sacred and different forms of violence. Drawing on cases from revolutionary France to the Russia of Vladimir Putin, the international authors probe the nature and agency of local blasphemy accusations, the historical and legal framework in which they were expressed and the violence, both physical and symbolic, accompanying them. In doing so, the volume reveals how cultures of blasphemy, and related acts of heresy, apostasy and sacrilege, were a companion to or acted as a trigger for physical action but also a form of how violence was experienced. More generally, it shows the importance of religious sensibilities in modern society and the violent potential contained in criticism or ridicule of the sacred and secular alike.

Corruption, Anti-Corruption, Vigilance, and State Building from Early to Late Modern Times challenges current historiographical approaches, proposing new interpretations to rethink the relation between corruption and the socio-political and economic transformations since early globalisation. By adopting both transnational and long-term approaches, the book explores the historical dimension of notions such as accountability, transparency, and vigilance in their immediate political, social, and legal contexts. The starting point is to view corruption not as a moral category that emerged in 1789 to delegitimise past, foreign or present state systems, but as a constantly contested concept that must also be historicised in past societies. The collection revisits chronologies and examines different local, regional, and national frames, highlighting that the path to modernity was contested and affected by a variety of unique circumstances, such as revolutions and external political powers. La historia de la democracia en el espacio ibérico es inseparable de los pioneros esfuerzos del movimiento republicano por ensanchar la esfera pública y construir una sociedad de ciudadanos iguales en derechos y oportunidades. El estudio de las culturas republicanas en la historia contemporánea de Portugal y España se ha consolidado como una importante corriente de investigación en las últimas décadas. Evaluar la distancia recorrida era una tarea inaplazable que este volumen ha pretendido alcanzar. Sin embargo, esta aproximación historiográfica quedaría incompleta sin una exploración de las líneas de investigación que el republicanismo ofrece en la actualidad.
