A colony of Hermit Crabs lives happily on the beach of a Caribbean island. The younger of them play, the older are busy with the most various matters: some invent, others mend their shells cracked and trampled by bathers. Everything goes on quite good, until three developers arrive on the beach, animated by the unfortunate idea to build a large Hotel right in that beautiful little gulf on the coast. The construction works begin and the colony of Hermit Crabs, here called Coccolì, is violently uprooted from the natural habitat in which they lived. But the little creatures do not give up. Will they be able, with the help of the inventor Pico, to recover the lost territory?
... As one walks the streets of the Philadelphia, Sauer's buildings stand out for the masterly way he calibrates architectural composition and the varied playfulness of his solutions which, through a complex body of intuitively defined rules, one will find the very essence of Sauer's field of action where he interprets the reality of the setting and its surroundings. This book, then, is an enjoyable, lively read, because it proposes a profoundly democratic architecture that opens individuals' minds, leaves room to the end-user's aesthetic sensibility and presupposes a curious, imagining heart...
This book tells the story of the making of a community, which occurred hand-in-hand with the building of an archipelago of residences in the countryside north of Rome. Lina Malfona together with Fabio and Simone Petrini designed and built this archipelago of ‘ultra-residential’ villas, a place to experience private as well as public life. This book tells the story of the making of a community, which occurred hand-in-hand with the building of an archipelago of suburban residences, which reaffirm the value of the countryside within a technological and digital society. From 2010 onwards, Lina Malfona together with Petrini Architects and thanks to the support of the structural engineer Tommaso Malfona has been designing and building this archipelago of villas in the countryside north of Rome, which is also where their home-studio is located. This experimental residence has become a point of reference for the design of an innovative housing typology, an ‘ultra-residential’ villa as a place to experience private as well as public life. With Contributions of Pippo Ciorra (introduction); Kenneth Frampton, Stanley Allen (blurbs)
