The Ethiopian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) was formed in 1960 as a fruit of the mission work of Swedish Mission Bibeltrogna Vänner (SMBV), founded in 1911, its roots dating back to the evangelical revival that swept across Sweden in the 19th century. The main goal of the society was to reach the Oromo people in Ethiopia with the Gospel. In 1911 mission work began in Eritrea and in 1921 the first SMBV missionaries reached Addis Ababa, from where work was expanded into the cities of Harar and Dire-Dawa as well as into the Arsi province. When EELC was founded, members were few, estimated to around 500. Since then the church has grown and today has a membership of about 25,000. This book covers the first part of EELC:s history, describing the development from 1921 to 1935, ultimately leading up to the establishment of the church in 1960. Most studies of ancient New Testament manuscripts focus on individual readings and textual variants. This book, however, draws attention to, and attempts to advance, study of the textual and paratextual features of New Testament manuscripts. After defining paratext, the contributors discuss key manuscript characteristics, including headings, introductions, marginal comments, colophons, layout features such as margins, columns, spacing, and reading aids such as segmentation, paragraphos, ekthesis, coronis, and rubrication. The goal of this book is to explore how textual criticism goes beyond individual readings and includes studying the history of texts and their perceivable features.
John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was very much a man of his time--an eminent Victorian philosopher and theologian who formed part of an influential Romantic movement in literature, art, and architecture. A central figure in the Tractarian movement of the 1830s and 1840s, he reasserted the Catholic doctrines and practices of the Church of England against the strongly Erastian tendencies of the time, and the culmination of these ideas led to what was perhaps his most notorious work, "Tract 90," in which he claimed that the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England could be interpreted from a Catholic viewpoint. In 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic church, and since his "rediscovery" by fellow Catholics after the First World War there has been a well-organized campaign for his canonization as a saint. Newman's writings have commanded interest from across the disciplines of literature, philosophy, and theology, but many critical assessments of his life and works have been accused of bowing to the mythology that has built up around Newman and his fellow Tractarians. This book offers a more challenging appraisal of Newman's life and thought.

From its inception what came to be known as the Oxford Movement was always intended to be more than just an abstruse dialogue about the theoretical nature of Anglicanism. Instead, it was meant to spread its ideas not only through college common rooms, but also bishop's palaces, and above all the parsonages of the Church of England. The Oxford Movement in Practice presents an analysis of Tractarianism in the generation after Newman's conversion to Roman Catholicism. While much scholarly work has been done on the Oxford Movement between 1833 and 1845, and on a number of specific individuals or aspects of the Movement after this period, this work adopts a different approach. It examines Tractarianism in the parochial setting, and charts the development of the Movement through its influence on the parishes of the Church of England. George Herring offers detailed explanation of the development of ritualism in the 1860's, and shows how the Ritualists diverted the course the Movement had been taking from 1845.
This newly edited version of John Henry Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua sheds new light on Newman's celebrated account of his passage from the Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church and repositions his narrative within the context of transformative religious journeys of other Victorian intellectuals. Frank M. Turner is the first historian of Victorian thought, religion, and culture to edit Newman's classic autobiographical narrative. Drawing on extensive research in contemporary printed materials and archives, Turner's powerfully revisionist Introduction reevaluates and challenges the historical adequacy of previous interpretations of Newman's life and of the Apologia itself. He further presents Newman's volume as a response to ultramontane assertions of papal authority in the l860s. In addition to numerous explanatory textual annotations, the volume includes an Appendix featuring six important Anglican sermons that providesignificant insights into Newman's thought during the years recounted in the Apologia.
