The book introduces techniques to improve the effectiveness of serious games in relation to cognition and motivation. These techniques include ways to improve motivation, collaboration, reflection, and the integration of gameplay into various contexts. The contributing authors expand upon this broad range of techniques, show recent empirical research on each of these techniques that discuss their promise and effectiveness, then present general implications or guidelines that the techniques bring forth. They then suggest how serious games can be improved by implementing the respective technique into a particular game.
This book provides a comprehensive review of the physical, biochemical and cellular defences of the lung. It investigates their background to explain the success of the systems in maintaining health. The principles that apply are then brought into context by the description of the animal models that are used to study the response to infections. The final section addresses the lung defences from the viewpoint of the organisms and antigens inhaled.
The second edition of Microbiology of Waterborne Diseases describes the diseases associated with water, their causative agents and the ways in which they gain access to water systems. "Hypoxaemia is a major contributor to child deaths that occur worldwide each year; for a child with pneumonia hypoxaemia increases the risk of death by up to 5 times. Despite its importance in virtually all types of acute severe illness, hypoxaemia is often not well recognized or well managed, more so in settings where resources are limited. Oxygen therapy remains an inaccessible luxury for a large proportion of severely ill children admitted to hospitals in developing countries. This is particularly true for patients in small district hospitals, where, even if some facility for delivering oxygen is available, supplies are often unreliable and the benefits of treatment may be diminished by p...

Postbiotics: Science, Technology, and Applications explains fundamental and applied knowledge about postbiotics. Chapters cover the definition and classification of postbiotics, principal methods for preparing them, information about the main postbiotic constituents and their biological activities and their clinical health benefits. The authors also familiarize the reader with potential applications of postbiotics in the food industry, pharmaceutical chemistry, medicine, and veterinary practice. The text is supported by informative illustrations, tables, and references for further reading. This comprehensive reference, with its emphasis on both basic and applied knowledge, is useful for researchers, academics, veterinarians, and students in the field of microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, biotechnology, food science, and agriculture.
This fresh edition, substantially revised and augmented, provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics. The examples used, analyzed using Stata, can be applied to other areas.
