The Honourable Ruaraidh Erskine of Marr led a life very much on the move. He has left us no personal papers, although his stamp is across the personal papers of many others, and he has been written about by several eminent scholars. Erskine had his supporters, most notably the historian and Gaelic language activist, Seumas Mac A’ Ghobhainn, who hailed him as a ‘forgotten Gaelic patriot’. He has had his critics too: the BBC’s Andrew Marr, wrote that ‘in colloquial terms he was a bit of a nutter’. However, Hugh MacDiarmid said regarding Erskine: ‘Justice will be done to him yet with a biography’. This is it and it is long overdue.

The 15th July 1889 was a busy day on the Isle of Arran as it was Fair Monday. A number of visitors opted to climb Goatfell though many were put off by the cloud lingering on the summit. It seemed a day like any other, but that evening there would be an tragic event which would lead to one of the biggest man-hunts in Scottish criminal history, as well as a sensational murder trial. Two of the people who set out to climb the mountain that afternoon were John Watson Laurie, a 28-year-old pattern-maker from Coatbridge, and Edwin Robert Rose, a 32-year-old clerk from London. They had met three days previously on the excursion steamer Ivanhoe. Rose’s battered body, ‘the face terribly mangledâ€...

Ruby McCracken's life is OVER. Her parents have forced her to move to the Ordinary World and that means -- new home, new school and worst of all, no magic! Seriously?! A witch without magic? That's LITERALLY tragic. Ruby has to leave behind her broomstick (and walk everywhere -- YUCK!) and her friends (no more watching Hex Factor together on a Saturday night). She's absolutely STARVING with no snack spell, and there's no way to get revenge on the mean girls at her boring new school without a good curse. Despite her best witching efforts, the Ordinary World remains tragically magic-deprived, until Ruby receives a mysterious hext that seems to offer an answer. That is, if she can figure out what it means and, more importantly, who sent it. Packed with great humour, loveable characters and witty banter, Ruby McCracken: Tragic Without Magic is perfect for fans of Witchworld and The Worst Witch.

Keeping Away the Spiders

In a series of honest, often humorous and brutally frank essays, Anne Pia discusses sexuality, gender identity, reluctant feminism, and food as a sumptuous, sensual game-changer. She conveys her exhilaration at the transformative power of music and learning, clothes and fashion. She gives an unflinching account of coming to terms with a daughter's disability. This life-changing book shows how positive energy can be drawn from life's most challenging experiences. Anne asks the central question: 'Who am I and who do I want to be?' and invites the reader to do the same.

Mary Symon’s Scots poems, especially those dealing with the impact and aftermath of the Great War, have been much admired and widely anthologised, yet her collected work has been unavailable in print for the best part of a century. This new annotated version includes a preface by Fred Freeman and a critical introduction by Ian Spring that places her in the context of the Scots language revival of the early twentieth century and compares her work to contemporaries such as Charles Murray, Violet Jacob and, of course, Hugh MacDiarmid.

As the child of peasants, Karen grew up with a pair of simple red shoes. Then, when her parents died, Karen was adopted by a rich old woman who gave Karen a new pair of red shoes that would make princesses green with envy. This newfound wealth causes Karen to forget her humble origins and grow up to become a cruel and vain adult. Then, one day, the red shoes that sparked her greed come to life and steer Karen down a path she never would have imagined in her wildest dreams. This volume also includes Metaphrog's adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen classic, "The Little Match Girl" and a tale of their own invention, "The Glass Case".
