In 1926 Barry Dierks, a young American architect, arrived in Paris and fell in love with France... Roland and Ghislaine are a young couple with unclouded happiness. Or almost, for they have no children, which is very sad. Advised by an old woman, they burn an enormous candle in the chapel erected on an islet of the lake of Aiguebelette. They hope that divine intervention will enable them to give birth to the much-desired child. Now, when they return a few days later to the chapel, it is a little charming Prince of fifteen years who seems to fall from heaven in Adam's uniform. What to think? What to do? Twentieth-century French Dramatists
Essays on twentieth-century French playwrights who were largely influenced by non-French traditions, during the greatest age of French theater since the mid 1700s. French drama of the twentieth-century was cosmopolitan, experimental and eclectic and attempted to appeal to a wider audience than in the past. Dramatists came not only from Paris but from the provinces and the French states of the Caribbean as well as from Francophone countries such as Belgium.
