A new perspective on design thinking and design practice: beyond products and projects, toward participatory design things. Design Things offers an innovative view of design thinking and design practice, envisioning ways to combine creative design with a participatory approach encompassing aesthetic and democratic practices and values. The authors of Design Things look at design practice as a mode of inquiry that involves people, space, artifacts, materials, and aesthetic experience, following the process of transformation from a design concept to a thing. Design Things, which grew out of the Atelier (Architecture and Technology for Inspirational Living) research project, goes beyond the mak...

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the First International Workshop on - operative Buildings (CoBuild’98) – Integrating Information, Organization, and Ar chitecture, held in Darmstadt, Germany, on February 25–26, 1998. The idea for this workshop and actually the term “cooperative building” was created during the activi ties of initiating the consortium “Workspaces of the Future” for conducting an inter disciplinary R&D program in cooperation with partners from industry. We discovered that there was no appropriate forum to present research at the intersection of informa tion technology, organizational innovation, and architecture. The theme “Integrating information, or...

In cities around the world people use a variety of public spaces to relax, to protest, to buy and sell, to experiment and to celebrate. Loose Space explores the many ways that urban residents, with creativity and determination, appropriate public space to meet their own needs and desires. Familiar or unexpected, spontaneous or planned, momentary or long-lasting, the activities that make urban space loose continue to give cities life and vitality. The book examines physical spaces and how people use them. Contributors discuss a wide range of recreational, commercial and political activities; some are conventional, others are more experimental. Some of the activities occur alongside the intend...

01 .Industrial Archaeology. European approach to recovery productive memory

Collaborative Design

Design occurs in a rich social context where the effectiveness and efficiency of social interaction and collective performance are key to successful outcomes. Increasingly, design is being explored and developed as a collective, collaborative, participatory, and even community process. The heightened recognition of designing as a social process has stimulated interest in collaborative design. This book contains the proceedings of the international conference "CoDesigning 2000" held in Coventry, England, September 2000. During this meeting exponents from a wide range of design domains came together to present and discuss perspectives on and new knowledge and understanding of collaborative design, and the evidence for enhanced design performance through collaboration. Within this volume different motivations for, conceptions of, and findings about collaborative design are addressed in 50 contributions by different research groups. Structured into 6 sections according to the main fields of interest, it provides a survey of the state of scientifically based knowledge and trends emerging from collaborative design research and their implications for a wide range of domains.
