Secondary Cohomology Operations
Although the theory and applications of secondary cohomology operations are an important part of an advanced graduate-level algebraic topology course, there are few books on the subject. The AMS now fills that gap with the publication of the present volume. The author's main purpose in this book is to develop the theory of secondary cohomology operations for singular cohomology theory, which is treated in terms of elementary constructions from general homotopy theory. Among manyapplications considered are the Hopf invariant one theorem (for all primes $p$, including $p = 2$), Browder's theorem on higher Bockstein operations, and cohomology theory of Massey-Peterson fibrations. Numerous examples and exercises help readers to gain a working knowledge of the theory. A summary ofmore advanced parts of the core material is included in the first chapter. Prerequisite is basic algebraic topology, including the Steenrod operations. The book is geared toward graduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic topology and can be used for self-study or as a textbook for an advanced course on the topic. It is available in both hardcover and softcover editions.

Iconographic Exegesis and Third Isaiah
Although scholars employ pictorial material in biblical exegesis, the question of how images from the Ancient Near East can contribute to a better understanding of the Bible has been left unanswered. This is the first monograph to outline a historical method for iconographic exegesis. The methodological study includes both responses to important theoretical questions such as What is an image? and What is culture? and an interdisciplinary exploration of issues of history, art history, archaeology and cultural anthropology. The three-stage method proposed is embedded in hermeneutical and exegetical reflections. The application of iconographical exegesis to the interpretation of metaphors is also considered. In demonstrating the method and its application, Izaak J. de Hulster focuses on Third Isaiah and develops three iconographical exegetical studies on yad in Isaiah 56:5, light in Isaiah 60 and grape processing in Isaiah 63.
Stable and Unstable Homotopy

Algebraic Topology: Oaxtepec 1991
This book consists of twenty-nine articles contributed by participants of the International Conference in Algebraic Topology held in July 1991 in Mexico. In addition to papers on current research, there are several surveys and expositions on the work of Mark Mahowald, whose sixtieth birthday was celebrated during the conference. The conference was truly international, with over 130 mathematicians from fifteen countries. It ended with a spectacular total eclipse of the sun, a photograph of which appears as the frontispiece. The papers range over much of algebraic topology and cross over into related areas, such as K theory, representation theory, and Lie groups. Also included is a chart of the Adams spectral sequence and a bibliography of Mahowald's publications.
