Terri, Angie, Brianna, and Terri's mother, Emily, are in Door County, Wisconsin for a long-awaited vacation and the wedding of Terri's beloved cousin, Courtney Robertson. Their two weeks of rest and relaxation have barely started however when, while visiting the Cana Island Lighthouse, Terri hears and sees, a violent argument between two men. One of the men looks frighteningly familier and the other quickly turns out to be right under Terri's nose. Despite Angie's determination, 'not to get involved', they are both forced to investigate, or face a situation that could ruin the upcoming wedding and tear the Robertson family apart. Terri has also commited herself to plan and prepare, an elaborate rehearsal dinner for twelve guests. The champagne flows and all goes well but in the back of her mind, Terri is forming a plan to find out just exactly what's going on in beautiful Door County and hope their vacation and the wedding can go off without a hitch and without a body count!
The Memory of All That is Katharine Weber’s memoir of her extraordinary family. Her maternal grandmother, Kay Swift, was known both for her own music (she was the first woman to compose the score to a hit Broadway show, Fine and Dandy) and for her ten-year romance with George Gershwin. Their love affair began during Swift’s marriage to James Paul Warburg, the multitalented banker and economist who advised (and feuded with) FDR. Weber creates an intriguing and intimate group portrait of the renowned Warburg family, from her great-great-uncle, the eccentric art historian Aby Warburg, whose madness inspired modern theories of iconography, to her great-grandfather Paul M. Warburg, the archit...
This book is an ethnographic account of San Francisco’s most inner city neighborhood, the Tenderloin. Using its streets as campus and its people as teachers, Stannard-Friel uses storytelling as a way of explaining why inner city social problems, such as homelessness, drugs, prostitution, untreated mental illness, and death of young people by murders and suicides, exist and persist there. The work delves into who lives in the Tenderloin and why, the role of dedicated service providers in meeting people’s needs and encouraging social change, and what lessons university students, many coming from their own challenging backgrounds, learn through community engagement and service learning that encourage understanding, compassion, and meaningful contributions to society. The work also explores how life in the area is changing, and why so many youth report that they “love living in the Tenderloin.”
