Mathematician And His Mathematical Work, A: Selected Papers Of S S Chern

This volume is about the life and work of Shiing-Shen Chern (1911-), one of the leading mathematicians of this century. The book contains personal accounts by some friends, together with a summary of the mathematical works by Chern himself. Besides a selection of the mathematical papers the book also contains all his papers published after 1988.

Lectures On Differential Geometry

This book is a translation of an authoritative introductory text based on a lecture series delivered by the renowned differential geometer, Professor S S Chern in Beijing University in 1980. The original Chinese text, authored by Professor Chern and Professor Wei-Huan Chen, was a unique contribution to the mathematics literature, combining simplicity and economy of approach with depth of contents. The present translation is aimed at a wide audience, including (but not limited to) advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, as well as physicists interested in the diverse applications of differential geometry to physics. In addition to a thorough treatment of the fundamentals ...

Complex Manifolds without Potential Theory

From the reviews of the second edition: "The new methods of complex manifold theory are very useful tools for investigations in algebraic geometry, complex function theory, differential operators and so on. The differential geometrical methods of this theory were developed essentially under the influence of Professor S.-S. Chern's works. The present book is a second edition... It can serve as an introduction to, and a survey of, this theory and is based on the author's lectures held at the University of California and at a summer seminar of the Canadian Mathematical Congress.... The text is illustrated by many examples... The book is warmly recommended to everyone interested in complex differential geometry." #Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, 41, 3-4#

Inspired By S S Chern: A Memorial Volume In Honor Of A Great Mathematician

Shiing-Shen Chern (1911-2004) was one of the leading differential geometers of the twentieth century. In 1946, he founded the Mathematical Institute of Academia Sinica in Shanghai, which was later moved to Nanking. In 1981, he founded the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) at Berkeley and acted as the director until 1984. In 1985, he founded the Nankai Institute of Mathematics in Tianjin. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1975; the Wolf Prize in mathematics in 1984; and the Shaw Prize in mathematical sciences in 2004.Chern's works span all the classic fields of differential geometry: the Chern-Simons theory; the Chern-Weil theory, linking curvature invariants to ch...

Selected Papers

In recognition of professor Shiing-Shen Chern’s long and distinguished service to mathematics and to the University of California, the geometers at Berkeley held an International Symposium in Global Analysis and Global Geometry in his honor in June 1979. The output of this Symposium was published in a series of three separate volumes, comprising approximately a third of Professor Chern’s total publications up to 1979. Later, a fourth volume was published, focusing on papers written during the Eighties. This second volume comprises selected papers written between 1932 and 1965.

This volume presents a set of never-before-published notes from lectures given by S.-S. Chern in 1951 on the topic of "Minimal Submanifolds in a Riemannian Manifold." Also presented are five of Chern's expository papers which complement the lecture notes and provide an overview of the scope and power of differential geometry: From Triangles to Manifolds, Curves and Surfaces in Euclidean Space, Characteristic Classes and Characteristic Forms, Geometry and Physics, and The Geometry of G-Structures.

The editors dedicate this volume to the late S.–S. Chern, one of the great mathematicians of the twentieth century, and a leader in the field of differential geometry. Chern made seminal advances in areas such as web geometry, integral geometry, complex geometry, Riemannian geometry, and Finsler geometry. He is well-known for the Chern-Simons theory, the Chern-Weil theory, and Chern classes. His brilliant research and teaching have exerted a deep and lasting influence on mathematics.

Presented herein are survey papers by mathematicians from around the world, particularly from China, who review the present state of the areas in which Chern worked, and discuss the various directions which those fields will take in the future. This collection contains valuable information useful to graduate students and researchers.

An Introduction to Riemann-Finsler Geometry

This book focuses on the elementary but essential problems in Riemann-Finsler Geometry, which include a repertoire of rigidity and comparison theorems, and an array of explicit examples, illustrating many phenomena which admit only Finslerian interpretations. "This book offers the most modern treatment of the topic ..." EMS Newsletter.
