This book, which is part of a two-volume handbook set, gives a comprehensive description of recent developments in materials science and manufacturing technology, aiming primarily at its applications in biomedical science, advanced engineering materials, conventional/non-conventional manufacturing techniques, sustainable engineering design, and related domains. Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Science: Tools and Applications provides state-of-the-art research conducted in the fields of technological advancements in surface engineering, tribology, additive manufacturing, precision manufacturing, electromechanical systems, and computer-assisted design and manufacturing. The book captures emerging areas of materials science and advanced manufacturing engineering and presents the most recent trends in research for emerging researchers, field engineers, and academic professionals.
The book covers the state of the art in hybrid manufacturing in terms of processing and resulting properties. The book progresses from traditional hybrid manufacturing processes such as compression molding (CM), injection molding (IM), sheet molding composites (SMC) to emerging hybrid processes. Overmolding is often used to combine the abovementioned process, for example, where short fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites or unreinforced thermoplastic systems are co-cured or bonded to continuous fiber-reinforced laminates or inserts. Fiber reinforced metal laminates (FML) hybrid components are being used where benefits of both FRPs and metal are realized. Emerging trends in hybridization due to the adoption of advanced AM by industries are also covered. AM has enabled unique possibilities for hybrid composites development. Advanced AM processes are integrated with traditional manufacturing processes to enable embodiments such as AM-CM, AM-IM, AM-AFP, AM-thermoforming, and AM-filament winding (FM).
NANOCELLULOSE This book provides the latest up-to-date information on the exciting applications of nanocellulose in human diseases by giving in-depth explanations of their synthesis, characterization, and real-world applications in the biomedical sectors. Nanocellulose is a promising nanomaterial with unique qualities including low cost, durability, non-toxicity, accessibility, etc. Cellulose can be classified into two types: nanocrystals and nanofibrils, depending on the way it is extracted from trees, plants, or other cellulose-containing species. Textiles, cosmetics, and food products are just a few of the commercial uses for nanocellulose. However, it also has strong potential for use in...
This reference focuses on defined types of compounds which are of interest to readers who are motivated to explore basic information about new materials for advanced industrial applications. General and established synthetic methodologies for several compounds are explained giving a straightforward approaches for researchers who intend to pursue new projects in materials sciences, This book presents 9 chapters, covering phthalocyanines, polymethines, porphyrins, BODIPYs, dendrimers, carbon allotropes, organic frameworks, nanoparticles and future prospects. Each chapter covers detailed synthetic aspects of the most established preparation routes for the specific compounds, while giving a historical perspective, with selective information on actual and outstanding applications of each material, unraveling what likely might be the future for each category. This book is intended as a hands-on reference guide for undergraduates and graduates interested in industrial chemistry and materials science.
Polyester-Based Biocomposites highlights the performance of polyester-based biocomposites reinforced with various natural fibres extracted from leaf, stem, fruit bunch, grass and wood material. It also addresses the characteristics of polyester-based biocomposites reinforced with rice husk fillers and various nanoparticles. This book explores the widespread applications of fibre-reinforced polymer composites in the aerospace sector, automotive parts, construction and building materials, sports equipment and household appliances. Investigating the advantages of natural fibres, such as superior damping characteristics, low density, biodegradability, abundant availability at low cost and non-abrasive to tooling, this book discusses what makes them a cost-effective alternative reinforcement material for composites in certain applications. This book serves as a useful reference for researchers, graduate students and engineers in the field of polymer composites.
This book explores the increasingly important intersection of the digital world and mental health in the lives of pediatric and young adult populations. Young people are spending a considerable amount of time on digital screen activities such as social media, texting, and online gaming. The vast majority of teens and pre-teens have access to computers and smartphones shifting social interaction away from face-to-face contact toward online communication. A practical resource, Teens, Screens, and Social Connection provides the reader with a targeted yet comprehensive understanding of a wide variety of internet and media-related topics facing youth today. Chapters include discussions on the dev...
