From the first hospitals to pioneering pharmacy techniques, the early history of medicine reflects the groundbreaking contributions of Islamic physicians and scientists. Less recognized, however, is the impact of Islam on the health and daily health practices of modern day Muslims. Meticulously documented with current research sources and relevant religious texts, Health and Well-Being in Islamic Societies sheds light on the relationships between Muslim beliefs and physical, psychological, and social health. Background chapters trace Muslim thought on health and healing as it has evolved over the centuries to the present. The authors provide even-handed comparisons with Christianity as the t...
A fully-updated and reworked version of the classic book by Stephen Kemmis and Robin McTaggart, now joined by Rhonda Nixon, The Action Research Planner is a detailed guide to developing and conducting a critical participatory action research project. The authors outline new views on ‘participation’ (based on Jürgen Habermas’s notion of a ‘public sphere’), ‘practice’ (as shaped by practice architectures), and ‘research’ (as research within practice traditions). They provide five extended examples of critical participatory action research studies. The book includes a range of resources for people planning a critical participatory research initiative, providing guidance on ho...
Establishing the agenda for global HR, this book looks through the eyes of HR professionals themselves. It gives a broad, coherent overview of the field of IHRM and a detailed, practical analysis of what is needed to be successful in this crucial area of modern management. A number of key questions are addressed: Does IHRM drive the business agenda more than domestic HRM? What is the impact of IHRM on organizational effectiveness? What are the keys to success in IHRM? Drawing upon current research conducted as part of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's Globalization Research Project the text includes data from surveys of HR professionals and company practice as well as longitudinal case studies.

Supervised sequence labelling is a vital area of machine learning, encompassing tasks such as speech, handwriting and gesture recognition, protein secondary structure prediction and part-of-speech tagging. Recurrent neural networks are powerful sequence learning tools—robust to input noise and distortion, able to exploit long-range contextual information—that would seem ideally suited to such problems. However their role in large-scale sequence labelling systems has so far been auxiliary. The goal of this book is a complete framework for classifying and transcribing sequential data with recurrent neural networks only. Three main innovations are introduced in order to realise this goal. F...
Condition monitoring, fault diagnosis and prognosis of machinery have received considerable attention in recent years and they are increasingly becoming important in industry because of the need to increase reliability and decrease possible loss of production due to the fault of equipments. Early fault detection, diagnosis and prognosis can increase equipment availability and performance, reduce consequential damage, prolong machine life and reduce spare parts inventories and break down maintenance. With the development of the artificial intelligence techniques, many intelligent systems have been employed to assist the maintenance management task to correctly interpret the fault data. The bo...
This book argues that the last four decades have seen profound and important changes in the nature and social location of religion, and that those changes are best understood when cast against the associated rise of consumerism and neoliberalism. These transformations are often misunderstood and underestimated, namely because the study of religion remains dependent on the secularisation paradigm which can no longer provide a sufficiently fruitful framework for analysis. The book challenges diagnoses of transience and fragmentation by proposing an alternative narrative and set of concepts for understanding the global religious landscape. The present situation is framed as the result of a shif...
This book provides detailed information on the various ethnic fermented foods and beverages of India. Most of the Indian ethnic fermented foods are naturally fermented, whereas the majority of the alcoholic beverages have been prepared using dry starter culture and the ‘back-sloping’ method for the p...
