This volume deals with the occurrence of lexical gaps in the domain of linguistic action verbs. Though these constitute a considerable proportion of the verb inventory of many languages, not all concepts of verbal communication may be expressed by lexical items in any particular one of them. Introducing a conceptual system which allows gaps to be searched for systematically, this study shows which concepts of verbal communication are and which are not lexicalised in English, German and Dutch. The lexicalisation patterns observed shed light on the way in which verbal behaviour is conceptualised in a particular speech community. To complete the picture, the volume also addresses the question of whether communication concepts which may not be expressed by verbs may be lexicalised by fixed multiword expressions.
This book contains selected state-of-the-art contributions to the 9th conference on natural language processing, KONVENS 2008 (Konferenz zur Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache), with the central theme: text resources and lexical knowledge. The collection is unique in its placement of focus on the interaction between both of the above-mentioned fields, illustrating in particular the importance of methods in corpus linguistics for building lexical resources on the one hand, and the relevance of lexical resources for the analysis of and intelligent search methods for text corpora on the other. The selected articles all present novel approaches to one of three different research areas which in turn define the three parts of the book: Techniques and models for the linguistic analysis of text resources: contributions from computational linguistics Methods and tools for the acquisition of lexical knowledge from digitized and linguistically annotated text resources Approaches to the representation of lexical knowledge in digital media for various purposes.
This edited book represents the first cohesive attempt to describe the literary genres of late-twentieth-century fiction in terms of lexico-grammatical patterns. Drawing on the PhraseoRom international project on the phraseology of contemporary novels, the contributed chapters combine literary studies with corpus linguistics to analyse fantasy, romance, crime, historical and science fiction in French and English. The authors offer new insights into long-standing debates on genre distinction and the hybridization of genres by deploying a new, interdisciplinary methodology. Sitting at the intersection of literature and linguistics, with a firm grounding in the digital humanities, this book will be of particular relevance to literary scholars, corpus stylists, contrastivists and lexicologists, as well as general readers with an interest in twentieth-century genre fiction.

While lying has been a topic in the philosophy of language, there has been a lack of genuine linguistic analysis of lying. Exploring lying at the semantics-pragmatics interface, this book takes a contextualist stand by arguing that untruthful implicatures and presuppositions are part of the total signification of the act of lying.
Text patterns can be described in several interwoven dimensions. This volume looks at examples of empirical studies of historical text types to show how quantitative methods from corpus linguistics can be productively combined with qualitative approaches based on manual annotations in order to identify changes in text patterns on various levels by examining characteristic linguistic units.
Dr Robert Munro (1835-1920) was a distinguished medical practitioner who, in his later life, became a keen archaeologist. His particular interests lay in the lake-dwelling settlements of his native Scotland, known as crannogs, as well as those then being discovered across Europe. In 1885 Robert Munro undertook a review of all lacustrian research in Europe, travelling widely to study collections and visit sites. The results of this work formed the basis for the prestigious Rhind Lectures at the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1888. These were then published as The Lake-Dwellings of Europe, a landmark publication for archaeology and one that cemented Munro's archaeological reputation. In...
