Mobility and Biography
The subject of transnational lives has only recently gained importance in historical research. With its transnational approach to “mobility and biography,” this volume brings together research on aspects of mobility and biography across different times and spaces to open up new interdisciplinary perspectives. Networks, movements and the capacity to become socially or spatially mobile in and across Europe are not only analysed as structural factors, but rather seen as connected to concrete practices of mobility among different groups in the spheres of business, politics and the arts: from Jewish merchants via legal and financial advisors all the way to musicians.

This volume is concerned with the hitherto neglected role of the humanities in the histories of the idea of race. Its aim is to begin to fill in this significant lacuna. If, in the decades following World War II and the Holocaust – years that witnessed European decolonization and the African-American civil rights movement – the concept of ‘race’ slowly but surely lost its legitimacy as a cultural, political and scientific category, for much of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century concepts of race enjoyed widespread currency in numerous fields of knowledge such as the history of art, history, musicology, or philosophy. Bringing together some of the most distinguished scholars in their respective fields, this is the first collective attempt to address the history of notions of race in the humanities as a whole.

Ausgehend von der Perspektive junger Beschäftigter an den UNO-Standorten in Genf und Wien befasst sich das Buch mit der zunehmenden Flexibilisierung und Arbeitsplatzunsicherheit. Die Studie legt ein besonderes Augenmerk auf mikrostrukturelle Machtpraktiken und die individuelle Agency. Sie zeigt, wie UNO-Beschäftigte ihre persönlichen Erzählungen mit dem in den vergangenen Jahren und Jahrzehnten kreierten Organisationsbild in Einklang bringen, und in welchem Wechselspiel die prekären Beschäftigungsverhältnisse mit einem moralischen Überlegenheitsgefühl stehen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass diese Entwicklungen keinen Widerspruch darstellen, sondern zwei Seiten derselben Medaille sind. Particularly in the humanities and social sciences, festschrifts are a popular forum for discussion. The IJBF provides quick and easy general access to these important resources for scholars and students. The festschrifts are located in state and regional libraries and their bibliographic details are recorded. Since 1983, more than 639,000 articles from more than 29,500 festschrifts, published between 1977 and 2010, have been catalogued.
Fremde Nähe
Bilder und Vorstellungen von deutschen Städten und Landschaften haben sich durch persönliche Erfahrungen, gewachsene Traditionen und nicht zuletzt durch mediale Reproduktionen tief in unser kulturelles Gedächtnis eingraviert. Mit Darstellungen von Dirndl, Maßkrug und Weißwurst nimmt Bayern hier, gewissermaßen als Vorreiter des Typischen, eine besondere Rolle ein. Doch wie wirkt der stereotyp aufgeladene Raum des Freistaats auf Besucher abseits der Touristengruppen? Um das Spektrum der verschiedenen Perspektiven auszuleuchten, hat eine Projektgruppe von Studierenden der Vergleichenden Kulturwissenschaft in Regensburg die Wahrnehmungen derer untersucht, die aus dem nahen Ausland oder aus fernen Welten Asiens und Afrikas als Migranten nach Bayern gekommen sind. Auf diese Weise versteht sich der Sammelband 'Fremde Nähe' als Baustein zu einer breiten Integrationsdebatte wie auch als Element kulturwissenschaftlicher Migrationsforschung.
