Surviving HIV/AIDS in the Inner City

Based on her work with minority women living, in Newark, New Jersey, Sabrina Marie Chase illuminates the hidden traps and land mines burdening our current health care system as a whole. For the women she studied, alliances with doctors, nurses, and social workers could literally mean the difference between life and death. By applying the theories of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to the day-today experiences of HIV-positive Latinas, Chase explains why some struggled and even died while others flourished and thrived under difficult conditions. These gripping, true-life stories advocate for those living with chronic illness (continued from front flap) --

The Power of Anticipatory Images in Student Achievement

The Power of Anticipatory Images in Student Achievement

This book features ten high academically achieving, low-income, inner city students from Newark, New Jersey, who graduated from public high schools at or near the top of their class and continued to excel in college. Using a qualitative research design, the author interviewed the ten students and the person who most influenced their educational progress about what motivated them to achieve at such high levels. Three mutually reinforcing anticipatory images emerged as a common element of their stories. In their own voices, the students describe the anticipatory images they framed, how they developed them, and how they used them to their advantage. Davy advances a theoretical model of the Anticipatory Competent student who continually progresses in the directions of the images projected ahead.

Holding on

In "Holding On," anthropologist Alyson O Daniel analyzes the abstract debates about health policy for the sickest and most vulnerable Americans as well as the services designated to help them by taking readers into the daily lives of poor African American women living with HIV at the advent of the 2006 Treatment Modernization Act. At a time when social support resources were in decline and publicly funded HIV/AIDS care programs were being re-prioritized, women s daily struggles with chronic poverty, drug addiction, mental health, and neighborhood violence influenced women s lives in sometimes unexpected ways. An ethnographic portrait of HIV-positive black women and their interaction with the...

Evil is Coming... Between her love of dance and Chase, Sabrina finally feels she found her place in the world. Yet somewhere in the darkness her Master is waiting... watching for the perfect opportunity to wield her as his greatest weapon. Chase would give her his heart and build a beautiful future with her, if Sabrina could battle back the darkness brewing within her. But the Master's control is clawing at her, tempting her into submission. The war between good and evil has begun, with Sabrina as its unwilling target. Loyalties will be tested. Patience rewarded. As the powers that be rise and fall, who will be left standing in the end? And what side will Sabrina choose? The compelling conclusion to the Finding Sabrina Series ends with Master of My Life, the epic finale fans have been waiting for! ★★★ Please Note: The series was originally designated as a four-book series. Because of the amount of time that has passed since I published Part Two, I've decided to conclude the series with one large volume. Sabrina's story is now a three-book series. ★★★

Queer Newark

Histories of gay and lesbian urban life typically focus on major metropolitan areas like San Francisco and New York, opportunity-filled destinations for LGBTQ migrants from across the country. Yet there are many other queer communities in economically depressed cities with majority Black and Hispanic populations that receive far less attention. Though just a few miles from New York, Newark is one of these cities, and its queer histories have been neglected—until now. Queer Newark charts a history in which working-class people of color are the central actors and in which violence, poverty, and homophobia could never suppress joy, resistance, love, and desire. Drawing from rare archives that...
