A devastating critique of the Arab world's political stagnation by one of its most revered thinkers. The 1967 War - which led to the defeat of Syria, Jordan and Egypt by Israel - felt like an unprecedented and unimaginable disaster for the Arab world at the time. For many, the easiest solution was to shift the blame and to ignore some of the glaring defects of Arab society. Syrian philosopher Sadik al-Azm was one of the few to challenge such a view in his seminal Self-Criticism after the Defeat. Exposing the political and cultural faults that led to the defeat, he argued that the Arabs could only progress by embracing secularism, gender equality, democracy, and science. Available in English for the first time, Self-Criticism after the Defeat is a milestone in modern Arab intellectual history. It marked a turning point in Arab discourse about society and politi on publication in 1968, and spawned other intellectual ventures into Arab self-criticism.

The World Health Organization in 2004 estimated approximately 1.1 billion people did not have access to clean water and that 35% of Third World residents died from water-borne illnesses. While the situation is grim, recent advances strongly indicate that many of the current water quality problems can be addresses – and potentially resolved – using nanotechnology.Nanotechnology is already having a dramatic impact on research in water quality and Nanotechnology Applications for Clean Water highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for nanotechnology to positively influence this area of environmental protection. Here you will find detailed information on breakthroughs, cutting edg...
Like a modern-day Jane Jacobs, Janette Sadik-Khan transformed New York City's streets to make room for pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and green spaces. Describing the battles she fought to enact change, Streetfight imparts wisdom and practical advice that other cities can follow to make their own streets safer and more vibrant. As New York City’s transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan managed the seemingly impossible and transformed the streets of one of the world’s greatest, toughest cities into dynamic spaces safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Her approach was dramatic and effective: Simply painting a part of the street to make it into a plaza or bus lane not only made the stre...
Nanotechnology is already having a dramatic impact on improving water quality and the second edition of Nanotechnology Applications for Clean Water highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for nanotechnology to positively influence this area of environmental protection. This book presents detailed information on cutting-edge technologies, current research, and trends that may impact the success and uptake of the applications. Recent advances show that many of the current problems with water quality can be addressed using nanosorbents, nanocatalysts, bioactive nanoparticles, nanostructured catalytic membranes, and nanoparticle enhanced filtration. The book describes these technolo...
Olad was the first-born son of the second son in the line of Kane, a prestigious lineage. His life was simple while he was growing up, but as he grew into a man, he realized his future was fated. His cousin, Zhatma, the first-born of a first-born, should have inherited the leadership and responsibilities of the clan. But, his future was also fated. His life would not continue within the clan. İmam Cafer-i Sadık'a göre, Müslüman toplulukların en büyük sorunlarının başında gelen cehalettir. Bu nedenle toplumu aydınlatmak ve eğitmek için "medreseler" açtı. Buraya dil, din ve ırk farkı gözetmeksizin dünyanın her yerinden talebeler aldı. Her dönemde öğrencilerinin sayısı 4.000'e ulaştı. Medresede öğrenciler, din bilimleri yani fıkıh, tefsir, hadis-i şerif, tecvid ve Kur'an-ı Kerim dersleri alıyorlardı. Ayrıca astronomi, kimya,i cebir ve tıp bilimleri de veriliyordu. Zaten İmam Cafer-i Sadık'ın Avrupa'da tanınmasına ve şöhret kazanmasına sebep olan bu fen bilimleridir. İmam Cafer-i Sadık, hiçbir zaman yöneticilik koltuğuna oturmayı ...
