Cardinal Arithmetic
Is the continuum hypothesis still open? If we interpret it as finding the laws of cardinal arithmetic (really exponentiation since addition and multiplication were classically solved), it was thought to be essentially solved by the independence results of Godel and Cohen (and Easton) with some isolated positive results (likeGalvin-Hajnal). It was expected that only more independence results remained to be proved. The author has come to change his view. This enables us to get new results for the conventional cardinal arithmetic, thus supporting the interest in our view. We also find other applications, extend older methods of using normal fiters and prove the existence of Jonsson algebra.
Classification Theory
In this research monograph, the author's work on classification and related topics are presented. This revised edition brings the book up to date with the addition of four new chapters as well as various corrections to the 1978 text.The additional chapters X - XIII present the solution to countable first order T of what the author sees as the main test of the theory. Logic and Its Applications
Two conferences, Logic and Its Applications in Algebra and Geometry and Combinatorial Set Theory, Excellent Classes, and Schanuel Conjecture, were held at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). These events brought together model theorists and set theorists working in these areas. This volume is the result of those meetings. Advances in Algebra and Model Theory
Contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, all written by leading experts in the field. The surveys are based around talks given at conferences held in Essen, 1994, and Dresden, 1995. Each contribution is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at the conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community. The topics include field and ring theory as well as groups, ordered algebraic structure and their relationship to model theory. Several papers deal with infinite permutation groups, abelian groups, modules and their relatives and representations. Model theoretic aspects include quantifier elimination in skew fields, Hilbert's 17th problem, (aleph-0)-categorical structures and Boolean algebras. Moreover symmetry questions and automorphism groups of orders are covered. This work contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, each is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at Conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community.
Proper Forcing
These notes can be viewed and used in several different ways, each has some justification, a collection of papers, a research monograph or a text book. The author has lectured variants of several of the chapters several times: in University of California, Berkeley, 1978, Ch. III , N, V in Ohio State Univer sity in Columbus, Ohio 1979, Ch. I,ll and in the Hebrew University 1979/80 Ch. I, II, III, V, and parts of VI. Moreover Azriel Levi, who has a much better name than the author in such matters, made notes from the lectures in the Hebrew University, rewrote them, and they ·are Chapters I, II and part of III , and were somewhat corrected and expanded by D. Drai, R. Grossberg and the author. Also most of XI §1-5 were lectured on and written up by Shai Ben David. Also our presentation is quite self-contained. We adopted an approach I heard from Baumgartner and may have been used by others: not proving that forcing work, rather take axiomatically that it does and go ahead to applying it. As a result we assume only knowledge of naive set theory (except some iso lated points later on in the book).
Descriptive Set Theory and Definable Forcing

Translated from the French, this book is an introduction to first-order model theory. Starting from scratch, it quickly reaches the essentials, namely, the back-and-forth method and compactness, which are illustrated with examples taken from algebra. It also introduces logic via the study of the models of arithmetic, and it gives complete but accessible exposition of stability theory.
Surveys in Set Theory
This book comprises five expository articles and two research papers on topics of current interest in set theory and the foundations of mathematics. Articles by Baumgartner and Devlin introduce the reader to proper forcing. This is a development by Saharon Shelah of Cohen's method which has led to solutions of problems that resisted attack by forcing methods as originally developed in the 1960s. The article by Guaspari is an introduction to descriptive set theory, a subject that has developed dramatically in the last few years. Articles by Kanamori and Stanley discuss one of the most difficult concepts in contemporary set theory, that of the morass, first created by Ronald Jensen in 1971 to solve the gap-two conjecture in model theory, assuming Gödel's axiom of constructibility. The papers by Prikry and Shelah complete the volume by giving the reader the flavour of contemporary research in set theory. This book will be of interest to graduate students and research workers in set theory and mathematical logic.
