The book provides high yield information in basic ophthalmology including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and embryology that are required for preparation of ophthalmology exams. The book focusses on all parts of the eye, with special focus on basic science including appropriate amount of information on clinical science for students and trainees. It is written in a lucid manner with textual notes and illustrations for quick learning and better understanding. Each section contains high yield information in separate points, with commonly asked information in “Eye Yield Note” boxes. It also includes estimated study time for each section to better plan the study. ...
Open Access Data is emerging as a source for cutting edge scholarship. This concise book provides guidance from generating a research idea to publishing results. Both young researchers and well-established scholars can use this book to upgrade their skills with respect to emerging data sources, analysis, and even post-publishing promotion. At the end of each chapter, a tutorial simulates a real example, allowing readers to apply what they learned about accessing open data, and analyzing this data to reach the results. This book can be of use by established researchers analyzing data, publishing, and actively promoting ongoing and research. Key selling features: Describes the steps, from A-Z, for doing open data research Includes interactive tutorials following each chapter Provides guidelines for readers so that they can use their own accessed open data Reviews recent software and websites promoting and enabling open data research Supplements websites which update recent open data sources
Due to the ageing population, the need for cataract surgery is increasing very steeply in line with demographic change. Cataract surgery is a highly successful and cost-effective intervention, but the implantation of conventional monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) only allows a restoration of distance vision, with minimal postoperative functionality of near and intermediate vision, which are necessary for many common daily tasks. Although the removal of the opacified crystalline lens has been demonstrated to have a very positive impact on the mental health, daily functioning, and Quality of Life (QoL) of patients, it is not surprising that the poor visual restoration achieved with conventional monofocal IOLs at different near and intermediate distances might limit patient functioning and consequently QoL, considering changing lifestyles and increased working years. Therefore, this has led to a growing interest toward IOLs that may also reduce spectacle dependence for intermediate and near distances.
The management of emergent neuro-ophthalmic conditions can be a life saving encounter for the general ophthalmologist. This book is designed to help comprehensive ophthalmologists make emergency triage decisions for initial evaluation and treatment of potentially vision- or life-threatening conditions. This text is case-based and is intended to provide the reader with the opinion and expertise of two neuro-ophthalmologists. One, Dr Lee is an ophthalmology-based neuro-ophthalmologist and the other, Dr Brazis is a neurology-based neuro-ophthalmologist. In the current edition two, we have updated the content according to the recent advances in ophthalmic investigations and imaging, along with the emergence of recent serological tests for Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody disease (MOGAD) and Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) disease. We also have also provided high-yield summary points after each case for takeaway messages.
Data-driven science has become a major decision-making aid for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Computational and visual analytics enables effective exploration and sense making of large and complex data through the deployment of appropriate data science methods, meaningful visualisation and human-information interaction. This edited volume covers state-of-the-art theory, method, models, design, evaluation and applications in computational and visual analytics in desktop, mobile and immersive environments for analysing biomedical and health data. The book is focused on data-driven integral analysis, including computational methods and visual analytics practices and solutions for discovering actionable knowledge in support of clinical actions in real environments. By studying how data and visual analytics have been implemented into the healthcare domain, the book demonstrates how analytics influences the domain through improving decision making, specifying diagnostics, selecting the best treatments and generating clinical certainty.
