Recent decades have witnessed both a renewed energy in feminist activism and widespread attacks taking back hard-won rights. Despite powerful feminist movements, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly undermined the progress women have struggled for decades to achieve; how can this be? What explains this paradox of a strong feminist movement coexisting with stubborn patriarchal arrangements? How can we stop the next global catastrophe initiating a similar backlash? This book suggests that the limitations of social theory prevent feminist strategies from initiating transformative changes and achieving permanent gains. It investigates the impact of theoretical shortcomings upon feminist strat...

This book considers the relationship between the vogue for putting the Ottoman Empire on the English stage and the repertory system that underpinned London playmaking. The sheer visibility of 'the Turk' in plays staged between 1567 and 1642 has tended to be interpreted as registering English attitudes to Islam, as articulating popular perceptions of Anglo-Ottoman relations, and as part of a broader interest in the wider world brought home by travellers, writers, adventurers, merchants, and diplomats. Such reports furnished playwrights with raw material which, fashioned into drama, established ‘the Turk’ as a fixture in the playhouse. But it was the demand for plays to replenish company repertories to attract London audiences that underpinned playmaking in this period. Thus this remarkable fascination for the Ottoman Empire is best understood as a product of theatre economics and the repertory system, rather than taken directly as a measure of cultural and historical engagement.
Fear of childbirth (FOC) is common and affects approximately 5-20 % of all pregnant women. FOC is associated with giving birth by caesarean section on maternal request (CSMR). The rate of caesarean sections (CS) and CSMR has increased during the last decades. To decrease these women’s fear, the rate of CSMR and to promote a more positive birth experience, many treatments for FOC have been evaluated. In Sweden, the treatment is individualized and given by obstetricians, midwives, psychologists or psychotherapists in the specialist care. Women with FOC suffer more often from psychiatric illness and rate their general health as less good, which is important to consider when counselling these ...
