Malays in the Holy Land: An Ethnolinguistic Study
This book is an ethnolinguistic study of Malay settlers in Mecca, Madinah and Jeddah, based on a research undertaken by the authors in 2014. Narration from the people themselves of their background history and community life had resulted in a wealth of data depicting a historical landscape of maintenance and shift of language use and lifestyle of three generations of informants. Where there used to be a strong inclination to adopt and adapt to the Arab lifestyle inclusive of language use, there now appears to be a revitalisation among the younger generation in the use of Malay in preparation for their return to the Malay world, a situation motivated by a more stringent policy of the Saudi government in offering foreign settlers citizenship and permanent residence.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.
Oral Traditions in Insular Southeast Asia
Insular Southeast Asia is made up of six nations, which are characterised by an extraordinary diversity of cultures and languages. Consequently, oral tradition in the region is similarly heterogeneous and may be performed in poetry, storytelling, singing or a combination of all three. Its study may be perceived from various academic angles. The present edition contains eleven contributions which discuss oral tradition from different perspectives, covering ecocriticism, poetics, semiotics, linguistics, folkloristics and politics.
