“Do you know what it’s like to have the world take you from a place where there was no hope and no chance of finding happiness, and then finally, it gives you a break, and you get something you never thought you deserved?” Luke Bright is back on the run. This time, he’s doing it alone. He’s left his friends behind in New York and soon his only ally is forced to go into hiding. Luke’s only solace is when the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself in beautiful San-Francisco, but it means going undercover to get it. Luke moves to his new home and thrives in his independent lifestyle. He is met with drama, excitement, danger and something he never expected to find in the USA. It all seems too good to true and it’s hard for him to not get attached. With his true purpose to fix the Atlantic Split fading into the background, will Luke be able to carry on living this dream life? With the chance of getting everything he ever wanted in his grasp, will he be able to finally leave his past behind or will the person he’s been hiding from finally catch up with him?
A biting satire of late 19th-century American imperialism, Captain Jinks, Hero was written by the American pacifist Ernest Howard Crosby. Crosby, who corresponded with Leo Tolstoy and advocated Tolstoy’s pacifist ideals in the United States, lambasts the American military and its involvement in the Spanish-American War and the Boxer Rebellion through the character of Captain Jinks, a jingoistic officer who embarks on a tragicomic quest to become a “perfect soldier.” The novel also satirizes the role of industrial and media interests in promoting war through the character of Jinks’s friend and companion Cleary, a yellow journalist who feeds sensational stories back to the home front at the behest of editors and monopolists.
