WMD, Nukes and Nuns

Where are the W.M.D.? It doesn't take a team of international inspectors to find the truth. Three nuns performed this service for free. Even as America sent its military forces into Iraq on the grounds that Saddam might have had Weapons of Mass Destruction, three nuns set out to open America's eyes to the W.M.D.s we cherish here at home. Armed with nothing but a rosary, a call for moral courage and a pair of fence-cutting pliers, three nuns spilled their own blood from baby bottles on the concrete dome of a missile silo in the midst of the sagebrush prairie. The stage was set for this peaceful protest by a sequence of events rooted in diplomatic and economic machinations going back to 1991 a...

In this era of renewed federalism, state governments take center stage advancing ambitious legislative agendas, pioneering innovative public policy, and providing much needed political leadership. The "devolution revolution" of the 1990s transferred many of the nation’s principal domestic programs from federal to state management, often without transferring the necessary funding. This combination of expanded responsibilities and deficient resources has left many states in financial turmoil—unable to fulfill policy promises. At the same time, escalating concerns over national security have prompted the federal government to reclaim more authority. The State of the States captures both the...

Cheap on Crime

After forty years of increasing prison construction and incarceration rates, winds of change are blowing through the American correctional system. The 2008 financial crisis demonstrated the unsustainability of the incarceration project, thereby empowering policy makers to reform punishment through fiscal prudence and austerity. In Cheap on Crime, Hadar Aviram draws on years of archival and journalistic research and builds on social history and economics literature to show the powerful impact of recession-era discourse on the death penalty, the war on drugs, incarceration practices, prison health care, and other aspects of the American correctional landscape.

The Barbaric Punishment

In this volume, Swedish human rights activist and political figure, Hans Göran Franck, examines the administration of the death penalty from a historical perspective. The author's opinions are based on his lifelong work and devotion to abolishing the 'barbaric punishment'. Building upon previously unpublished material and considerable detail drawn from Franck's personal experiences, it focuses on both the progressive developments within European countries and institutions over several decades, and the frustratingly retrograde situation that prevails in the United States. The author dedicated this book to those facing a sentence of death. During the course of his work, the author traveled to...

Sociologist-lawyer Larry D. Barnett advances the macrosociological thesis that, in nations that are structurally complex and democratically governed, concepts and doctrines of law on society-central social activities are fashioned by society-level conditions, not by particular (or even prominent) individuals. Because a substantial body of social science research has found that law in a modern nation does not have a large, permanent effect on the frequency of such activities, the book contends that the content of law on the activities is a product, not a determinant, of the society in which the law exists. Explaining Law bolsters this contention with several original studies, and illustrates types of quantitative evidence that can be used to build a macrosociological theory of law.
