O presente trabalho se volta para a história da historiografia brasileira do século XIX, a partir da análise de duas obras: o Ensaio sobre a história e estatística da Província do Espírito Santo, de José Marcelino Pereira de Vasconcellos, e as "Memórias históricas e documentadas da Província do Espírito Santo", de Braz da Costa Rubim. Através dessas duas obras, pretendemos refletir sobre as estratégias usadas pelos autores para trabalharem as especificidades da província, ao mesmo tempo que a inserem como parte do Estado monárquico brasileiro. De modo a perceber como articularam as tensões entre a experiência e a expectativa (o experimentado e o esperado; passado e futuro) por meio de referências que ligam às noções de civilização.
