Ping-Li is riveted by the fantastical shapes that streak across the sky above a city park. He will make his own kite, he decides, and it will be better than all the rest. He goes to Mr. Fo to buy the supplies, and the man tells him that he must paint his kite -- "or the emperor of the sky will be angry." Of all things imaginable, I liked drawing the most. However, a sheet of paper was way too small for me. And in the streets, people would walk over my drawings. One day -when it is raining so hard that the drawings are washed from the sidewalk -a man walks by. He is Anselmo, an old painter. He offers the young artist shelter in his house. Anselmo comes from a parrot island and makes enchanting paintings. Between Anselmo and the young artist a very special friendship blossoms... until the day Anselmo decides to return to his island. For a moment, a dream seems to fall apart. But Anselmo has taken care of the young artist's future! Sanne te Loo has made a moving tribute to people who value children.

A New York Times bestselling striking under-the-sea version of Goldilocks with bonus storytelling in the borders, as only Jan Brett could create. When Kiniro, a young mermaid, comes upon a gorgeous house made of seashells and coral, she is so curious that she goes inside. She’s thrilled to find a just-right breakfast, pretty little chair, and, best of all, a comfy bed that rocks in the current. But when the Octopus family returns home, they are not happy to find that someone has been eating their food and breaking their things. Baby has the biggest shock when she finds the mermaid asleep in her bed! Luckily, shock turns to happiness when Kiniro gives her a thoughtful gift before escaping from the twenty-four arms coming her way. Vibrant, intricate scenes of an underwater paradise transport this classic fairy tale to a magical setting inspired by the seas off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Along with fun details that enrich the storytelling in Jan Brett's trademark borders, this visual treat will enchant readers of all ages.

Crossing Boundaries with Children's Books

This annotated bibliography-organized geographically by world region and country, describing nearly 700 books representing 73 countries-is a valuable resource for librarians, teachers, and anyone else seeking to promote international understanding through children's literature. It is the third volume sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People. The first, Carl M. Tomlinson's Children's Books from Other Countries (1998) is a compendium of international children's literature with annotations of both in and out of print books published between 1950 and 1996. Susan Stan's The World Through Children's Books (2002) was the second and it included books published between the years 1997 and 2000. Crossing Boundaries includes international children's books published between 2000 and 2004, as well as selected American books set in countries other than the United States. Editor Doris Gebel has compiled an important tool for providing stories that will help children understand our differences while simultaneously demonstrating our common humanity.
